IP timing off on overhauled 6.2

Hi to all,

My friend recently put a 6.2 off in his 79 K5 Blazer the other day, and the truck is pouring out black smoke, and won't idle. We're thinking he stabbed the pump wrong.

Does anyone have a tech article on the alignment between the cam drive gear and the IP driven gear? I'm thinking he put #1 on TDC and lined up the two dots, but the man at the injection shop says to align up the two dots, then rotate the crank 360* to get the dots on the two gears 180* off, THEN stab the pump. Does this sound right?
