I'm looking at getting an 88-89 4 door f350, 4x4 7.3L IDI for a winter truck. Going to plow with it. I heard the kingpin d60 is better so that's is why I'm shooting for an 88/89.

-Anyway is is possible to get one in good mechanical condition for $3000ish? First off I know these trucks are sort rare, but I'm having a hell of a time finding one in that price range that is near Michigan.
- Any opinions on getting an zf5 or an c6? Can these IDI's hold 75/80 mph with an zf5 or is that non existent?

I'm hoping to get an IDI that way I can run the waste motor oil and save some money since I know these diesels are going to cost more to run than a gasoline engine.

I know the ford small blocks pretty well, till i found this forum and read about the WMO thing.

Nope,..

But welcome to the site!

The CC4x4's are as you know hard to come by and if they are any good they will bring $5K plus very easily. Unless you find something that is completely rotted out, or bad motor. Even then the front axle alone is worth $1,000.00 plus a 700 to 1200 motor, it all adds up quick. So you don't see them for under 4 or 5K very often.

That said, Here is one in FLint MI that the guy has been trying to sell fo quite a while, not shure why it is not selling but does not look like a bad deal:

Good Luck and If I see anything I will let you know.

Kinda depends on the market around you. Around here a F350 IDI 4x4 will fetch around 4000-6000 depending on condition. I think its possible to find one in that price range, but you will be looking for a while, and the truck might not be in the most perfect condition.

I would go with the ZF, cause I like manuals, thats just me. With the C6 when plowing your tranny oil might get hot.

I can hold mine at 75-80mph, its really singing up that high, around 2900 rpms (3.54 gears, 1:1 4th gear). They suck the fuel that high, I would say limit to about 60-65mph if you can.

I don't think 3K is out of the question... esp. since diesel fuel prices are up. There's gotta be a south Georgia farmer getting rid of one. Hunt around on craigslist.org in georgia & alabama.

Well, I'd say you could find an extended cab for 3k easier than a CC just because they are harder to come by. As mentioned, buying trucks now is somewhat easier due to high fuel prices. There are 2 trucks here in town for sale, on is a 7.3L IDI (not sure turbo or not) extended cab and a CC dually I just saw driving around. Neither had prices posted on them. I would try and find a truck down here somewhere just cause you'll have less rust issues to deal with..... I'll keep my eyes peeled.....

Hey thanks for the fast replies. I didn't know the king pin d60s were worth so much. I found some f350s in texas and california in my price range. But the midwest/east I don't see too much.

Im trying to stay with an f350, I want the solid d60. ;Sweet I found a 89 4x4 f250 in flint MI, for $900 reg cab, 351, c6, d44. But I think it already sold. Only way I'd buy an f250 is if I can score it cheap like that one.

I appreciate everyone keeps their eyes peeled. Thanks alot.

Jeremy, that the red truck that was by the garage? It looked like a nice truck, from your driveway at least :D

Yep, thats the one. At least all the glow plugs work in that truck, it'll start up in the dead of January with a temp of 10 below zero, without being plugged in.:D

It was going to be my wifes truck, then we found out we had another baby on the way, so we opted for the Chevy Astro AWD mini van.

Anyway, heres a couple of pics of the truck, I had already bought new fenders to put on the front. Put new pads and rotors on the front, and cleaned it up a bit.

Jeremy, that looks like a nice truck for the price. i know it took me about 6 months with a auction dealer friend to find me a crew cab diesel in my price range of 6-8k. that was before fuel prices softened up the market for these things.

keep looking, my 94 truck can hold 75-80 and still get decent miliage with my ZF-5. i know its newer than you are looking for though. if you want to plow and arent big on the highway the older 4 speeds are really tougher and better geared for that.

i may be in the minority but if you are buying the truck to plow snow with, i'd get an automatic and put a big cooler on it.
