I guess youre not gonna bite LOL

well it turns out it was my own damn fault, running studs to the bottom is NOT the way to do this.

upon torqueing, the stud turned, and cracked the block

as evident by the pictures below.

yes and no, while the girdle kept it from coming apart, one could argue if I just put the stock bolts back in the engine woulda been just fine.
ill get the correct procedure done next time lol

Very sorry this happened. Putting the same main cap bolts in probably would not have been long enough to maintain a good clamp purchase. So if you decide to install these RDI studs and main girdle.. How do you plan keeping the studs from turning into the bottom of the threaded hole???

Gary, that is the very question that brought upon the crows feet conversation, then the good ole boys started drinking beer, thinkin they some schmaaaat kinda readnecks, and started using their times tables and multiplying torque LOL
(pauses to open 2 beers)

the open crows foot allows you to use an allen wrench to keep the stud in place while you torque it.

I have no fear frank, there machines. these things happen.

I could tell you a story about a little 389 that broke my heart way back when.
but California has issued a over drought alert.

these things happen, and it is what it is.

Well at least you know. It was an expensive lesson but there is one lesson I have learned over the years. User errors are the best kind of errors. You just replace the user.

Brian, thanks for taking the time to do the post-mortem on this. So the studs continued to turn while nuts were being torqued. Having just installed head studs, I now begin to wonder if this happened when I installed them. I guess there is just so much more iron around the head studs that even when bottoming out damage does not occur?:dunno

Other guys have used the girdle from R&D I'm sure. So why are you the first guy to have issues? I have a hard time believing the others installed them much differently than you.

Thanks for tearing it apart. Amazing that a water leak was what initially doomed this engine. WOW.
