Truck
I have been driving it on and off
Yesterday I drove to and from the airport, no problems
Drop off my friend and no start, spinning fast, but no fire, not even a hiccup.
Got fuel, electric pumping
Power to the shut-off solenoid
A little click sound when I connect the wire, not as loud as I recall it being
No start
It is noticeable hot
So I think let it cool down
Hour later the same
So I shot a little ether (no glow)
Started spinning and instead of sputtering to life, nothing but slowing down, not speeding up!
Then after the ether went away the rpms went back to normal
My assumption is that the ether was igniting too early
Not wanting to damage anything I stopped.
This morning I tried again and the same result stone cold.
I'm stumped
Help please,
Jeff

Engine might not be hot enough, or there just is no fuel at all to help it start.

Don't use ether when the engine is warm. Now you know why. :)

If you are not getting any white smoke out the tail pipe when cranking, then you're not getting fuel to the injectors.

Have you tried the Schrader valve on the fuel head to see if you are getting fuel there? If you are, then it may be a problem with the injection pump.

Crack the injector lines open a bit like mntwins7 said. If you are getting fuel there, then the IP might be ok and injectors are clogged or stuck.

Are you running any alternate fuels? Did you pick up some bad fuel?

The N/A IDI _will_ start (and run) on ether. But you are using too much.
A tiny squirt is all you need. After that, VERY short squirts to keep it running.
Too much will stop the cranking. Even less will lock it up when it is warm.
If the ether bothers you, one of my friends started his with a gasoline-soaked
rag for years. He didn't know what glow plugs were, much less that his were
bad :)

BTW, I am not advocating that anyone USE ether. Just trying to keep the record
straight. Used sensibly, ether takes a lot of strain off starters and batteries.
For trucks sitting unused for years, it's the difference between a 30-second
start and a 30 minute one.

Ok, we have fuel at the shader valve
Unscrewed one of the connections between the injector and the tube that goes to the IP, and cranked for 20 seconds.....no fuel!
What now?

It could be a bad Injection Pump. If I were you, I would crack all 8 lines and see if you're getting fuel from any of the lines.

Start looking for an injection pump, or a good one you can borrow to verify if it is the IP.

How much fuel at the schrader valve? A dribble, or shoot across to the fender?

20 sec cranking is not a whole lot if you managed to get air in the IP. It can take an awfully long time to bleed the system.
Like crank, wait for the starter to cool, check for fuel at the injectors, repeat. Hooking up a battery charger is a good idea.

Take the hose off from the IP to #2 injector at the injector, stick it in a can or something, crank 5-6 seconds see if any fuel is coming out. Report back. It's only 9 PM there. Go do it.
