Only if you're replacing the up pipes.
But would be a million times easier with it out.

I haven't managed to get a real clear idea of where they're at. I understand the up pipes go down the back side between the block and firewall? I must have not seem them because they're on the back side of the turbo.

Sigh....I can pretty well guarantee you that at least the up pipe gaskets need to be replaced. I just moved my truck around the yard and heard what I understand to be the classic chittering sound of an exhaust leak right in the middle of the fire wall.

Correct. More of a fluttery noise?
I know it's big money, but I would recommend doing the bellowed up pipes, and do a ebpv delete pedestal.
Personally, I would let it go for now.
Make sure to start spraying all exhaust bolts daily, that way when the time comes, you may not have too much trouble.

I understand there's a reason the bellows pipes won't work on the OBS PSDs. Is that why you mention EBPV delete pedastal? What is that, also? (A point in the right direction will suffice)

allow me to requote what jasper said.....

No, that's a different thing.
Like these will work on obs. http://www.dieselpowerproducts.com/..._zanpyFPIK8JA7ALJpv2FIhQV7hOKvxjeVhoC1tzw_wcB
The ebpv delete pedestal gets rid of the ebpv function. And makes turbo removal/installation way easier. Also gets rid of any chance of the ebpv leaking oil. Here's one. http://www.riffraffdiesel.com/garrett-tp-38-blank-deleted-pedestal-94-97/

took me more than an hour to remove my up pipes, minutes to install them.
it was worth its weight in gold.

No, don't need that. Gut yours. Just drill out the rivets in the butterfly, knock it out and the pin. Then drill and tap the pin hole for a pipe plug.
And yes.
