in the past i have been thinking about completely rebuilding my 1987 6.9 but recently i have found a 94 factory turbo idi should i just swap that in instead? things to look for on those motors?

Sure you can. It's a direct bolt in pretty much. But your taking out a used motor and putting another used one in. And if there's nothing wrong with your current engine, there's no point in doing this unless your current one doesn't have a turbo and you want one.
Rebuilding a 94 turbo Idi can get expensive real fast since parts are hard to come by.
I would rebuild the one you got and stick a turbo on it. Or better yet, buy my ready to run rebuilt 6.9 for about 1/2 the cost it would take to rebuild yours :).

Yeah the correct turbo IDI piston rings are $198 if reusing the factory pistons. The IDI turbo also uses a different balancer and flywheel/flexplate that are externally balaced because of the larger wrist pins i believe.
