End of a Legacy.....IDI retirement.

Well boys, as sad it is to say, my good ol' reliable 1 owner 1990 F250 4x4 is officially retired. Plates are off, I destroyed my home made flat box cap all made of wood, screws and sheet metal. The tool box is now on my replacement truck witch is the 89 F150.

I took one final drive today on an old gravel road near my place to take pictures all around, these will be my "before" pictures in the album I'll make for the restoration.

Truck still runs perfect, drives great other than having abit of steering play, but the body is so rotten, the bench seat fell 2" on the drivers side, the seat has gone through the floor now, so i'm sitting alot lower now. The front end is knocking when I turn, (worn U-joints) I have absolutlly 0 front brakes, been my back brakes that been stoping me for at least the past 2 years.

I still am on the orignal clutch and DMF. DMF is knocking a good bit, clutch is fine, doesn't seem to slip. I did a burn out today to confirm that. lol

History:
I bought the truck brand new on May 10th 1990. Truck was built in March of 1990. Truck was originally grey, in 1999 I had it completlly re-done, all new body panels, fenders, hood, doors and rear quarters. Tailgate is original. And had it painted a nice 1999 Chrysler Burgundy color witch use to look really sweet, would change colors in different angles with the sun.

Needs an entire new body. We'll slowy start striping it down in the garage and this fall that's when the action will really start, we'll be gone all summer with the motorhome so won't do much.

My son wants this truck witch is why we'll restore it both me and him together.

He wants it completlly factory original, in all points. Gonna have to find all the orignal colors for everything. Were keeping the original interior, seat, dash, door panels, etc. etc. right down to the sun visors.

Engine needs a complete overhaul, all seals and gaskets. Don't know yet if were gonna rebuilt it, gonna take the heads off and see what it looks like inside and check the compression before doing so. ZF5 needs a rebuilt. I'll have a look at the transfer case. I'll see what the axles look like also.

So now were driving a 1989 F150 2wd automatic 6 cyl. With a deep sounding Cherry Bomb muffler on it. Was there when I bought it.

Sure is alot different than the diesel truck, I can accually hear the radio on the highway, it rides pretty nice, the floor doesn't rattle in the wind, the windsheild is nice and clear not full of cracks.

We'll keep y'all updated on what were doing with pictures and probably videos. My son will probably start a series of threads for the restoration with different subjects as we go.

Wish us luck!

Are you gonna rebuild the cab or replace it? My 72 chevy has foorboards and rockers like that and I am trying to decide whether to just find another cab to swap on.

ok,I know you guys are Canadian but what are you going to do about the vin?transfer it to the new body or junk the title and use the replacement bodies title?I have been wondering how that would work down here in the land of socialist bliss if I decided to replace the entire body on any rig.My deuce would be simple.I can swap the vin in 30 seconds and you cannot tell it.It is attached with Phyllips screws to the dash.

if its like my GMC its just heldon by 2 pop rivets. if it was me i would transfer the plate over so that it stays a 1990 ford F-250 diesel 5 speed 4x4 and so on. otherwise it could end up becoming a 1992 ford F-150 2wd shortbox blah blah blah lol. seems simpler by just moving the plate over.

I have been told it is illegal to do that down here. That is why I was wondering.Figured someone around here would know the answer better than my buddy.Granted, you could just pop and shut up.use the correct rivets and I bet no one would tell the difference.

Freight Train: VIN follows the cab, I know you're not *supposed* to switch VIN plates, but I think if you didn't ever mention it, and were putting the new cab onto a vehicle and switching the VIN so it's the original to that vehicle, and used the correct rivets, nobody would hassle with you......

I may have done some things like this in the past, but I'll never tell.....

IIRC, (I was informed a long time ago by a state trooper buddy) the VIN follows the cab because as far as the DOT is concerned, the passenger compartment is the only part of a vehicle that is considered to be "forever less safe" after a vehicle is totaled, even when fully repaired

a rolled over cab is safer than jon's swiss cheese cab. i bet if he got nudged in a parking lot the seat would fall out onto the transfercase! lol.

Here in the tax you to death state, this is how it works. You can use a cab clip. A cab clip is a cab without the fire wall. You us your existing cab firewall in its place. This will make your new cab the same as the old one. The other way is to have a bill of sale from the new cab. Present it to the DMV, they will issue a new VIN for the cab.

Removing just the VIN tag from either cab is illegal.

I'm keeping all the info from the original cab and swaping them over to the new cab, the donor truck is a 1990 F150 made in the U.S my F250 was made in Canada. Not to proud of the donor truck being made in the U.S but oh well, no one will know...exept me, witch is gonna bother me..... but whatever no differents really.
