Okay, so it's the 1989 Ford with the 7.5L and E4OD. This morning it decided to not go into park whenever the engine was shut off, and half the time when the engine was running it wouldn't go into park either, I could put the transmission selector into Park, but it would just roll, doesn't make any noise...

Fluid is clean and it has plenty of it.

Any ideas?

Turned out the linkage was iced up with frozen mud :/ Any rate it goes into park again now that it has warmed up, and I've washed all the mud out...

Also the steering column under the dash. There is a plate where the shifter selector and cable to transmission hook up. Mine was loose on my Excursion and F350 causing me problems similar to yours. Glad the problem was the mud and gunk frozen. If it happens again and its not cold may want to look it over see if those 2 pesky bolt are loose.
