Just curious... will a 1977 dana 44 HD (8 lug from a 1 ton) work in place of the TTB axle I've got right now on my '85 F250? I don't suppose it's a straight bolt-and-go kind of conversion?

they are different...the D44 will be 29 3/4" i believe and the TTB frame will be 34" to the center of the spring perches. and you cant just move the perches as the drivers side perch will be halfway up the side of the diff

D44 would work...but ...BUT...as Jason mentioned..you'd have a significant issue with spring perch widths being different.

FYI a D44 was NOT installed in an F350...they only came with D60, the D44 did however come in F250's

One Caveat for D44 is if it's a coil sprung model and you get the radius arms, you could....could take a coil sprung 2wd setup and install the D44 with that and swap some 8lug knuckles over....

Seriously though get a 60 and be done!

Thanks for the input and advice. Can't afford the Dana 60 though... That's the problem!! Lol. I'll probably pass on gettig and installing it though. And you were right about it being from an f250, AND its a 77.5 (if that matters). It is already an 8 lug axle though. I had some of my initial info wrong.

The f250 d44 will always be leaf spring.... the f150's and bronco d44's are coil spring and 5 lug..

The only ******* child is the d44 in the f150 supercabs. They were a 5 lug d44 with leaf springs

My E350 has a coil sprung D44HD. Of course it didn't exactly come from Ford that way. :D

keep shopping around for a D60, you'll be happier with the end product

X3^^^^^^

Having both axles right now, definitely go with the 60, keep saving those pennys, you will be so much happier in the end.

You will look at a 44 like its a toy after having a 60...

And I believe pre 1980 is 32" spring spacing and 1980 and up is 36"

The D44 is not an upgrade from the D50TTB. It has a lower weight rating, smaller bearings, and will be a challenge to adapt to the post '79 trucks. The D60 is a bolt in affair, pretty tough to beat any way you cut it.
