I have been talking to an engine rebuilder, and was ready to drop off my heads tomorrow to get the, worked over.

Got them out and had a good close look at them. The back two cylinders on both heads have a hairline crack between the valves.

Are they boat anchors?
I really don't want to drive them to the machine shop if they are. It is about an hour drive one way.

If you have a source for other heads, use them. The cracks can be fixed, sort of, but clean heads make you feel better about life.

Isn't it dcw that makes new castings for us? Seems like they are bad expensive.

if you can see cracks, find another pair.

yes they can be repaired
but they may be prone to cracking again, somewhere else.
i would be junking them.

Yep. I knew this, just wanted to hear it from someone else. So, need any anchors for those boats you got Brian?

Last I read about new head castings is there were no more being made overseas or anywhere else. But calling DieselCast Welding is the best idea to find out for sure. Cracked heads don't get better with time so I would not use or repair them.

Made a few calls this morning.

Diesel cast can get bare castings, although new are not an option anymore, 490 a piece.

I know where a turbo motor is, and I might try to pull it in a couple of weeks when I have time. If it is still there.....

Now would heat and EGT's be the primary cause for cracks between valves? Would the best preventative measure be to keep both temp and EGT's from getting too hot?

That's a good question. I have wondered this myself. The Pistons in this engine have hairline cracks in the top of them too...
