Here is a new one,for me anyway.
I was nosing around under the hood
looking at things, when I notice one
of the headbolts head is broken off!
Its on the passenger side.Must have
been recent as the metal is clean and
you can still see where the bolthead
was tight against the head.
Anybody else ever have this happen?
Am I doomed?
Thanks,
Doug

take a real small chisel--preferably a snap-on--because of quality--and slip it down the hole--and punch it with a hammer--then take a small screwdriver and try to turn it out. the bolts normally arent sealed into the head--but then again-------also put some penetrating oil down the hole to help break the threads free if at first it wont come out---

Thanks for the quick reply!
The bolt is broken off flush with the head,
maybe sticking up a little.
*sigh*At least I'll never be bored owning
a diesel!

Get a left handed drill bit and and a reversable drill, start trying to drill it out, as the bit digs in it will back the bolt ot if it isn't stuck in the block.

This often works well for me... I have a couple sets of Left had bits... only bad is that my reversible drills are all electric... **note to self get that air powered rev drill**

I took a picture,I'll see if I can upload it.
I've been toying with the idea of
getting it rebuilt/buying a rebuilt.
I bought a spare used motor of unknown
condition off of Craigslist.
Anyone know of a reputable shop in
Northern California?
After some of the shock wears off,
I'll give the left hand drill bit a try.

Turn your stick welder up good and hot, put a couple of blobs on the bolt, Weld a nut to the bolt and cool it rapidly with water before you try to take it out. Put your ground clamp as close to the bolt as you can. We do this everyday at work to get busted exhaust manifold bolts out of all types of engines.

Look closely. Some of the bolts actually pass through the upper part of the head, then back outside the head before passing back into the head again. If it is one of these, you may have an additional option for trying to get it out. I wouldn't drive it until you fix it, but I don't think your in too deep yet if you can just replace that one bolt. I lost a washer under a head bolt once, so I know the head can withstand the strain of looking support in one spot.
