How does the 6.9 compair to a 460 dimensionally?
I'm building a M715 Jeep truck and I'm torn between two motors.I know a 460 will fit in a M715.I found a 87? EFI 460 with 50K on a rebouild for $300.I allso found a 6.9 for $300,condition is unknown.
I would like to go diesel if possable. The truck is being build as work truck, tow rig and all around use.Not much offroad use.The truck is being build with a pair of dana 70s with 4.88 gears, 38" to 42" tires.I would like to use ZF5 spd behind which ever motor I use.The truck has a devorced transfer case, that hopfully will make finding one easyer.

Thanks for your recommendations

I dunno exact measurements, but they're dimensionally similar enough that if there's room for the 460, you'll fit the 6.9. M715 surely has enough room too. Good luck, post pics when you get the chance.

Doesn't look any bigger or smaller than the 460 I just pulled sitting in the engine bay. an IDI is a 1 wire motor, so, less headache than EFI.

weighs about 140 more pounds than the 460.

A semi mild 460 build is going to run in the 375-400 mark for hp and around the 500 mark for torque, if you choose your cam wisely and spend some time porting the heads. Fuel mileage will be half or less of what the IDI would do however.
For your app a 6.9 would probably do just fine.
