going to look at a 96 F450 on Saturday with a seized 460. only $650 asking price. maybe you should buy a parts vehicle and pull the brake off it? unit looks exactly the same.

Is there something I can do to fix that? Something not more expensive than replacing the assembly?

What you have is a 89-91 VSS with a nuked drive gear.

Ford had a delete cap for that hole. You can find them on most 92 on up two wheel drive E4OD extension housings.
Another option is to clean off whats left of the gear. Then stuff it back in the hole.

How does that fix the shifting issue? How does the computer talk to the transmission without the speed sensor?

you haven't done the basic yet. go to the rear and check to see if you have a sensor at the top of the rearend housing.

I did find another sensor at the top of the rear differential. It looks fine to me, I took a few photos. Both the sensor in the parking brake assembly and this one were connected to wires which looked fine.

that "should" be your sensor you need to pay attention to. do a continuity check on both plugs. one "may" be for cruise control if a aftermarket system is present. both cannot be providing signal to your ECM, only one can. if you are a betting man, throw the odds with the rear one.
