Check the wires for the tack where they go into the pickup on top of the timing cover. They tend to wear the insulation off and short out. Could also be a bad or dirty pickup.

This is printed on the black rubber, correct? (RT-1049,E5TZ-8575-C) There should be three arrows pointing up. They indicate the flow of the coolant. It doesn't matter which way the printing faces, as long as the arrows point toward the thermostat housing.
You should be able to tell if the advance is hooked up by the sound of the engine on a cold start. It should sound like an early Power Stroke until the advance cuts out.
The detergent is the reason people use it. It's still the go to fix for cleaning sticking internals of the injector pump while it's still on the engine.
