    Rear main seal replacement

So, if you cannot feel it with your fingernail drug across it, it is probably the shiny spot where the seal was riding. If that's the case clean it up with maybe a touch with a scotchbrite pad only going with the "grain" (direction of rotation). You can check if that is a sleeve on there by...

    IDI Newbie

I would guess any "normal" ATF will work. I used what was left of my Dex/Merc I used for my transmission. I have read accounts where Type F has higher detergent characteristics. Ok, fine. If I had type F laying around I would use it. It's just a couple of quarts for maybe 20 minutes of running...

    IDI Newbie

Mattbo, Yes, I just ran the truck with straight ATF about 2 quarts worth. Engine never changed sound or anything as it transitioned to straight ATF. Ran the 2 quarts until it was almost gone and shut it off and left overnight to soak. So yea, everything filled with ATF for a soak.

    IDI Newbie

Welcome from Melbourne, FL Mattbo. Thought I'd chip in my 2 cents. I had similar issues as you. I just took a little different slant to filling the filter. I pulled the hoses from the mechanical fuel pump and created an IV drip. Had to pull the fuel tank line to prevent the pump from pulling...

What is the part I’m missing? Ignition trim?

I have had to replace my ignition assembly also. I bought mine from Rock Auto for like $10 with the chrome outer piece. Find yourself an old school experienced locksmith and he should be able to reset your ignition tumbler to match your existing key. That way you don't have to mess with your...

    IDI mechanic San Jose area

I just now had an issue with an intermittent engine miss. Engine idling really smooth, then you can feel a miss. Blip the throttle and it goes away. I assumed it must be an injector or injectors, just not sure which one. I have read about this ATF trick and decided to give it a try. So I set up...

    Question on CDR Valve

I assumed the CDR valve, was a check valve in one direction. When I took mine off, I can blow in either port, and it is free flowing both directions. This does not sound right. If it is, I don't see the point of the valve. Just use a piece of pipe or hose to go from valley pan to back of the...

    Rear Main Seal Questions

LumberJackChuck, Thank you for identifying for me what that opening lead to. It explains a lot to me now. Your engine looks fantastic. I really like the red color.

    Rear Main Seal Questions

Hi Lumberjackchuck, so from your post 2 you say it is the drain for the valley pan from the TOP SURFACE of the pan? So anything that dribbles like from the injector pump, would run down the pan and out that opening? If that is the case, then now I understand how the back of the head gets wet and...

    Rear Main Seal Questions

Hi Nero, yea, I did not really want to trim the sleeve, but in fact it just bumped up against the block casting, but just cleared the main cap. I did check the diameter again and it still was good and round about where the seal lip would ride, which is about .375 inch in from face of the crank...

    Rear Main Seal Questions

Update: Ok. I double checked the crank flange diameter with my 3-4 inch micrometer. It measured 3.747-3.749. So there was no sleeve on it. I then used a 3.75 speedy sleeve from Oreilly's. The groove even though it looks like it was machined in, it's depth is about .004. If you look at the sleeve...

    Rear Main Seal Questions

Ok. Finally pulled tranny to rebuild and fix significant oil leak from rear main. A quart of oil every week. I pulled seal mounting plate off and saw the crankshaft seal surface. What is with that groove?? That can't be as designed. No wonder it was leaking cause that spot is about where the...

    o rings?

Just to throw it out there, I changed my injector o-rings a couple of times before I got them to quit leaking. Yet there were 3 that "weeped" and appeared wet. I tried the square viton o-ring thinking there would be more surface area for sealing. I put the square o-rings on the weeping caps and...

    Question about fuel filter housing

Well my fuel filter heater started leaking bad so it needed fixed asap. I have read that most guys generally remove it and plug the hole and simply eliminate it. Since I am in Florida, I also saw no need for the heater and figured I would do the same. I did not do the typical 1/2 NPT pipe thread...

What is this pressure sensor for?

I have been sorting thru and repairing all the things left to make the truck right. On the filter housing is this pressure sensor. What and where does it go to and operate? Since it looks to be a pressure sensor, I am guessing it may hook to the fuel filter warning light on the dash. The light...

Putting Oil Change into the Tank

Was just changing the oil in my truck (1994 7.3 IDI NA) and was wondering if there is any harm in just putting the waste oil into the fuel tank. We're talking like 12 quarts plus. I would make sure the tank is full of diesel, about 18 gallons so it would dilute sufficiently. I have a 500 mesh...

    Question regarding E4OD

Last summer I picked up a non-running 1994 Vin K regular cab 4x4 with an E4OD. The engine is not the turbo version according to the engine block number (7.3 U2U1028595). There was evidence of a turbo since there are firewall scorch marks in the paint on passenger side firewall. Not sure what...

Fuel Gauge pegged - where to start looking

Guys, I wanted to give a final update on my fuel tank issues. I bought this truck I think pretty cheap at $1800. The thing is, it is solid. No rust at all except surface rust on frame. Body absolutely solid. Only problem is someone did a Saturday night, a case of beer and 3 guys paint job on it...

    Question about glow plug controller

Just a simple question. If I leave the ignition key in the On position where everything in the truck is energized, the glow plugs start to warm up. What if you leave the key in that position for say, a couple of minutes, will you burn up the plugs? Or is the controller smart enough to time...

Fuel Gauge pegged - where to start looking

Wanted to update and ask some additional questions. So for me since I have a fork truck it was a no brainer to take the bed off rather than crawl around under the truck, Pic 01. I could not belief the condition of the sending units. Check out the corrosion. Pic 02. I noticed that there is no...

Fuel Gauge pegged - where to start looking

I have a 94 F-250 HD 4x4 Vin K truck with a NA motor. Systematically going thru it and making repairs. Next is the fuel gauge. I have replaced the the dual tank switch on the dash as it was broken. The gauge sits fully pegged on full regardless of which tank it is switched to and I know the...
