MPG woes
I call b.s. on the 15-17mpg towing most trucks only get that empty. Your about right for a mostly stock truck towing. I think the down pipe will make a noticeable difference. A 4" exhaust and a 6637 napa air intake would be cheap upgrades until you can get a chip. But i really dont see it doing...- wpfd571

You should get on more of a powerstroke site like superdutydiesel.com or powerstrokenation.com (sorry guys oilburners is more of a idi site) and do some reading. I would stay away from the so called name brand tuners (Banks, Bully Dog, Diablo and Edge) I would look at custom tuners (Beans, DP, TWildman, Swamps etc.) they may cost more up front but you will be much happier in the end. 1999 7.3 MPG
The napa intake is just an open filter most think its just as good as the aftermarket kits, the filter is around 50 bucks and you just need a 4" piece of pipe to connect it to the stock rubber hose. 1999 7.3 MPG
I also did the napa intake (a good bang for the buck mod), 4" magnaflow turbo back exhaust with no muffler, 203 thermostat and a diablo preadator tuner on the 40 horse setting i get around 17 mpg and have seen 18 a few times in the summer in the winter its around 15 with the longer warm up time...- wpfd571

Which set of wheels?
Sell both sets and get some nice 16" wheels. It sucks finding tires for a 16.5 wheel there just isnt much options. The aluminum wheels looks a lot better than the steel- wpfd571

Found a truck need help!
With 234k your gonna have some problems, its cheap enough. If you have the money go for it. It might nickel and dime you ya never know with those miles. I second the TC being the noise not something in the exhaust. There is a valve in the exhaust to make back pressure to warm the engine up...- wpfd571

6.2?? What to look for??
OK my fire dept has got a really good deal through the DNR to get a used surplus truck, what they have are a bunch of the old 1 1/4 ton chevy trucks with 6.2 diesels. What should we lookout for with the chevy diesel?? Any real major things to watch for? I know i've read about some glow plug...- wpfd571

Thats a little steep for the 97, for some reason dealers think the obs trucks are made of gold. And no offence but 3k may be about right for your truck on trade with the damage, remember they have to fix it and sell it, or sell as is. I know just how you feel about your truck i sold my 93...- wpfd571
