I know it says R for right but which side is the right? Is it right side when you face the truck from the front or the rear?

I ask because it seems to make sense that the right would be the driver side because this is a picture of the auto adjustment for the back brakes and the Grove

Shouldn't the Grove be on the inside where it is the GROVE that grabs the teeth of the adjuster?

OEM or replacement parts marked right or left are designated setting in the truck looking forward. That part is on the passengers side.

That's why we like to designate passenger or drivers side instead of right or left.

You see, that Grove will not grip the teeth like it looks like it should

So that means either
Left side is driver side or the PO installed it wrong?

You can see by the pic I posted, the little tab on the end has to be under the adjusting bolt.

I can confirm, anything you buy in the parts store, left is the driver's side, right is the pass side.

Also, don't assume that cheap auto parts store parts are stamped correctly. I've had pieces assembled wrong, labeled wrong etc.
Test it functionally, make sure it does what it's supposed to do when you put it together according to the picture. If it doesn't work, modify it or get another one.

I'll post a picture, since we all understand and enjoy pictures. I took this one in 2014 when I replaced the shoes on my CCDually. This is on the right side, the passenger side. Notice two things: 1) the tab in question is facing out, away from the adjuster notched wheel, and 2) the part in question has an "R" stamped on it. This was on take-apart, the way I found it when I popped the drum off.

Thank you. I feel better now. That is how I installed mine.

The part in question is for the passenger (right) side. It's a bit counterintuitive, but it will work with the stamped "tab" out.
