If you're going to a manual, a flywheel goes in place of the flex plate

So rebuild around my area is $3500 if I bring them the transmission and that’s a heavy duty unit with billet converter..

Monster transmission is about $2800 with the converter I believe

There is diy monster in a box for $900

And manual swap roughly $1500-2000

If you want rid of the driveline brake, I would happily take it off your hands

I hadn't heard of them before.
My recommendation is to have someone local repair it and give a good warranty. If something does go wrong with it, or its acting funny, at least the shop is local to check it out.

Its possible, you would have to have a 3 piece driveline with a carrier bearing. Any extendo cab or crew cab driveline would make a good canidate, just shorten the front section and swap out the slip end with a regular u joint to bolt to the brake.

I wonder if @Jesus Freak ever put that one on his tow truck I sent him...
No, I still got it. It'll bolt to the 4x4 t19 I have but I don't have a PTO for the T19. And sence then I've learned that the front brakes are the ones that have to be held to really stabize the truck. So it's in my limbo pile of stuff to confront one day.

So I talked with my wife about it this morning and her reply was of you can deliver a baby by yourself I’m sure you can handle it.

So I’m going to commit to a diy rebuild!

I'll chime in here and say that I did rebuild my 94 E4OD myself. I did buy the deluxe kit from the outfit you referenced in post #35, (Transmission Bench is his handle). He's out of Georgia. He's got a thorough video series on step by step rebuilding of the E4OD. It's really good. Make sure you get the memory stick for E4OD if you order from him. I just setup my computer in the shop and watched it step by step as I worked on it. Did not even use a manual except to look up tolerance specs. You might want to look at some of his videos, they're on YouTube under transmission bench E4OD. I recommend viewing the whole series, like 16 lessons before you tear into it. I wanted to do it myself because I just wanted to have a better understanding of how it works. For me, it makes troubleshooting easier. Plus, I saved some money!

When you call you get him, Jimmy, the guy that's retired now after 30 years of rebuilding transmissions. I had questions, and he was always able to answer my questions.

Of course, it's your call whether you DIY or farm it out.

That’s the series I watched last night!
I made it through 4 last night and I watched one at breakfast this morning. I’ll order from him and get the memory stick.

So it all went well?

Did you upgrade any of the parts to improve performance for towing?

I’m for sure going to diy after finding his video series last night.

Like I said earlier no fluff and very clear instructions

I was looking at that kit and then the one I posted early from transmission bench.
I’ll probably go with tranny bench considering he put together all those great videos

I just want to make sure I have the upgraded hardware that was a problem

Those brakes work really damn good when they are working, but are difficult and expensive to repair…

Mine will hold my 16k lb service truck with a 9k trailer on any slope in the Flint Hills…

If you don’t have limited slip, there could be a dangerous situation in icy conditions…

Mine has a TrueTrac aftermarket diff, so not as dangerous, but really 2WD trucks in the ice aren’t the best…

The thing is, do you have twin 15Klb hydrolic winches pulling against a loaded 12Klb FedEx truck that some goober stuck in sand all the way to the differential? If I was just trying to hold still, it would be one thing but I'm actually bracing against goobers.

Yeah, that’s much more load against the brake.

I’m erring towards that those driveline brakes probably aren’t really that good for what you do..
