If you have an IR thermometer you could try and see how it affects the temperature of the metal.

It will get warm. I don't know how efficient the transfer of energy will be as it depends on the color of the surface. With the epoxy, it shouldn't make any difference what type of lamp is used because the one I'm using is black. It adsorbs all the wavelengths. Painting I'm a noob at. I know a thing or two about light interacting with things... Hence my handle here. ;Sweet

It's actually a great idea and I really appreciate you bringing it up. It just hadn't dawned on me.

obviously the easiest solution to your temperature problems is to pack it all up and move out here to california.:rotflmaocookoo where i am at it has been 100 degrees for several days and will continue that way for the rest of the week.

You're funny. If I were going to pack up and go to Cali, the last thing on my mind would be dry time on my epoxy. I'd be searching out a clean truck to drive home.

I welded the core support back together tonight.

Welds are getting slowly better.

It was totally worth priming first. Notice the paint didn't burn off much.

I'll wipe it down and shoot a couple coats on it tomorrow I hope. The pot life is supposed to be 72 hrs on the epoxy so we shall see. I should have enough mixed to do it.

A word on the SPI epoxy. It actually sands pretty nice. I was surprised. I think you could block a panel in it if it was pretty straight.

Mike - Looking Good! Radiator support looks great.

What did you figure out on the cab?

I ordered a bunch of metal from lmc. Expect a quality report. It was supposed to arrive today but UPS freight couldn't be bothered to deliver it in the 8 HOUR WINDOW the asked for today. So after much a$$ chewing later, it will be here tomorrow. I got the it didn't get on the truck excuse. If it didn't get on the truck the driver should have known long before 7 pm and I should not have had to call them to find this out. So day 1 of vacation spent puttering around the house waiting for a truck that wasn't coming. Not happy. In the mean time I also ordered my remaining paint supplies from SPI. Reinforcements arrive Friday now. Good news is it looks like the weather is going to cooperate now and warm up a little. Hopefully I can get this thing at least all in primer while I'm off. If I'm lucky I'll get it painted all but the hood.

Yeah, the hood. Went to order it from lmc, suddenly it's back ordered. Okay. Find another place. Order, pay a little extra because they have them in stock. Yeah, find out a few days later they sent the parts back to the manufacturer do to fitment issues. Now back ordered 3-6 weeks. So I don't know if I should wait it out or try again to fix mine and cancel. Don't know yet. So as anticipated, my time off to get this done is getting screwed up.

I don't know if a repop hood would be the way to go. The few replacement panels I have dealt with have needed work to make fit properly. They are lighter gauge usually as well. How bad is your hood? Are there any auto dismantlers you can use? I don't trust the paint on replacement panels either. I think in the future I will remove it and then use epoxy.

My hood has a lot of little problems. There are a couple ripples in it on either side, the tips got bent when the snow slid off the garage and knocked it it over. There is a small spot of rust in the front lip too. The other one I have is beat to hell with hail damage. I picked a CAPA replacement that ought to be "better". I'm not thrilled about it but getting sheetmetal at a junkyard around here for something this old is tough, and if you can get it, it's rusty. I know this will be tough, but I'm also not looking for dime gaps either. I'm going to maybe take a look at it again because the part is back-ordered.

Mike,

Seems like hoods are normally Ok on most trucks. Any local salvage yards have a good hood sitting around?

Hope your parts how up so you can make some tracks!

Well day 1 complete. Unfortunately, I didn't take time to take pics today. I'll take some pics in the morning. I did finally get my stuff yesterday. Honestly, I'm pretty impressed with most of it. The fenders arrived in good shape. The patch panels are really heavy gauge stuff.

I got the drivers side A pillar cleaned back and got the rocker straightened almost perfect from where it had drooped. Fixed the crack in the main support on that side. It's ready to be pieced back in. All the outer metal seems to be really good (rocker, A pilar). It's just the inner parts the seem bad.

While I was in there, I took the steering column out, took the pedal box out and pulled the brake booster. It was real nice to do that standing up. :D

I will be installing my firewall reinforcement plate that came with the hydroboost kit. It doesn't look cracked yet so the factory plate should be good.

Need some light gauge angle and some sheet metal screws to put this all back. Not going quite as fast as I wanted but finding more badness than I thought. The A pilar on the other side is getting the same treatment and that's taking a while. If I can get the floor buttoned up by the weekend, I think I'll be happy.

Off to bed for an early start.

Mocking up with new metal

Drivers side floor pan is all mocked in with sheet metal screws. There is a problem with the floor pan stampings. It's hard to see it in this upcoming pick but both dr and pass sides have a groove stamped in them for strength that protrudes under the floor brace and won't let it set flat on the pan. That's one problem. The other problem is that eh shape of the footwell is close but not quite right. The are heavy enough gauge that beating and bowing them into place just isn't working. So I think the plan will be to cut out that section where the hump is and weld in a flat piece to make the floor pan flat. Then I'll split the brace again and fit it too the floor pan (it's not even close right now to being able to weld to it) and then weld it back together. The new cab mount section serves as bracing for the section that will be cut and welded so I don't think strength is an issue and absolute location is also not a huge problem at the tip of the brace because the only thing tied to it is the inner fender plastic.

We did also get the rocker straightened where it was bent/sagging but I don't have a good pick right now that shows it.

Tomorrow is completely finish mocking up the drivers side and flatten the floor pan etc. To make everything fit.

Then fix the pass side a pillar (it looks just like the driver one did). Finish cutting out the floor pan over there and fit the new pan.

Once that's all done, I'll pull the parts out an scuff them for epoxy as well as clean up all the areas where the overlapping metal is and shoot all that in epoxy. Then start assembling and welding permanent. I've got several small patches that need to go in too so I'll work at those. I bought the outer floor sections as well as the floor pans. They are for a standard cab but I think with a little trimming they will work great back in the extended cab area.

I'd like to wrap this cab floor tomorrow but realistically, it may be Tuesday. My updated goal is to have all the floor sections patched and get it in epoxy and back upright before I have to quit Wednesday. We shall see. I don't think the cab corners will take that long but I've been wrong so far.

Night.
