hey guys i was thinking about doing a mild build on my idi this summer, and i think im gonna run all of R&D IDI performance parts but the problem is i dont have the money to buy it all right now. i was thinking while i had the engine out putting head studs in it i could put the intake and cam, would the stage 1 cam run good in my idi without a turbo until i get one? and do i have to pull the engine to put head studs in? also about the turbo how have you guys run your down pipes?? because i have like 2 inches inbetween my engine and firewall..... cookoo :hail

To answer your questions, a hi performance cam will work just fine in a n/a idi. You do not need to pull engine to put studs in but you will have to put the 5 rear most studs on the head holes and use a rubber band to keep them in place when you are ready to lower the heads back on the deck. And I do not have a turbo so I can't answer that question lol

okay thanks i was wondering about the cam because the site says it bleeds off compression to alow for more boost... and like wrap a rubber band around each stud? or one band around all 5?

Haven't done it yet, but I am pretty sure you will be wrapping a rubber band around each stud and attach it to the valve spring just to keep the studs in the holes. You will not be able to put the rear studs in once the head is back on the deck unless you do that.

Personally, I would NOT go with R&D. I'll tell you why. He was a member here, but he was banned. He and some of his friends acted very inappropriately here. He created a fake account after he was banned to continue the BS he started. He still (to this day) bad mouths this forum and the people here. There are other sources for the parts you need without supporting someone who goes out of their way to bash this place and the good people that make this board what it is.

My two cents anyway.

if you want REAL HIGH performance from an IDI then there is only one company you can go with right now, it is the honest truth, you can't deny that. if you don't like that then i'm sorry. the truth is the truth same as facts are facts. you can't make that stuff up......by the way, R&D's numbers are proven.....

For the firewall clearance, you'll need to modify it a bit. Here's what I've done with both my IDI's. Take a hand grinder with a cut off wheel and cut the firewall lip. Cut the passenger's side half of the lip. That's all that is needed. Make the cuts about 1 inch apart. They should be cut the through the entire depth of the lip. Bend them up and toward the trans tunnel. That will give you room for the turbo's plumping.

the reason i was gonna go with the R&D stuff is because its cheep from what i've seen, and how far up do i cut the fire wall? just the lip? and what is the biggest down pipe that can be used?

a guy over on FTE just put one on his truck...pretty much the same fab work for piping, the only kicker is figuring out the oil feed/drain since the PSD turbo gets it's oil feed and drains it's oil threw the pedastal.

i tried looking for that thread i spoke of earlier but couldn't find it. i will try again though.

Do you already have a PSD turbo, or have access to one for cheap? if neither i would honestly go with some other aftermarket turbo. no wonky oil feed/drain issues and a better turbo. not that the psd turbos are bad but for the "extra" fab work involved and the money, there are better/easier options.
