this is dissapointing since i was looking to move in this direction. do you think some water injection could have cleaned it up?

would there be a way to catch this before it becomes a problem? something like a drive pressure gage?

I dont know if water injection would clean up the dirty exhaust or not.

ICBW, but I don't think a drive pressure guage would tell me if I was overdriving the turbo or not. I suppose with a bunch of math one could figure out the RPM speed of the turbine wheel based on engine RPM, etc.. but given it's a VGT turbo, that seems like an insane amount of turbo mapping. I'm not even really sure the reason it puked its guts is overspeeding the turbo, it's just my guess at this point. For all I know, I could have started with a weak turbo. I mean it didn't have shaft play or exhibit any of the easily identifiable turbo issues when I started this build.
I suppose if someone had a way to make a tach to monitor the RPM's @ the wheel it might be possible to rule in/out my hunch. That seems like a lot of high tech equipment, that someone probably wouldn't want hanging off the side of a pickup while it travels down the road.

I haven't totally given up on the VGT turbo idea. I do need to get this turbo off and dissect it and see what I can find. It probably will sit still for a week or two til I figure out what's up with my back and if I need surgery, etc..

Hey all, Haven't been around much. Had a few spare moments so thought I'd check in and say "hi"

The 94 is back on the road after collecting dust for several months (no time, no interest in getting it back on the road)

After a new turbo, some larger oil return line adjustments, it turns out it was the Turbowerx Scavenge pump that had given up the ghost. -cuss Fortunately I had a spare pump on hand, so it was swapped out. Sometime soon I'll tear that bad pump down and see what the issue was. The motor is fine, it's just not sucking oil.

So the pickup is on the road, runs like a ***** ape. In fact, compared to my stock 6.0 I'm pretty confident "down low" in the RPM band, and MPH, the ole 7.3 IDI outdoes my 6.0. The 6.0 would eat it's lunch shortly after a stop light though and the 6.0 certainly has more "finesse" whereas the IDIT is more "raw brute" go.

Right now it's being driven by a friend of mine, whom I've loaned the pickup too, to get his mobile welding biz off the ground. In a few months I'll probably be getting it back, hopefully in equally as good of condition, and have to decide if I want to keep her, and let her collect more dust, or if she needs to go for sale.

Hope all the old OB crew is doing well!

I followed this thread from the beginning, even before I joined, and wandered if your back might've gotten worse or something.
Good to hear it's alive again.
Also good to see a "closing statement" for a thread, instead of it just dead ending.

Idk IDIs are making power levels similar to a chipped 6.0 although with a lil more work. Lol. I guess it just depends on who's idi we are talking about. :D

i'm not talking about a chipped 6.0l vs. the Justin's IDI's. i'm talking, go get a bone stock 6.0l(what Jeff has) put a tuner with custom tunes on it and then line up against Jeff's IDI.....the 6.0l will WAX his IDI fo sho! Shoot probly just a FICM tune for his six would be all it needs to walk on his idi.

Thanks for chiming in and giving us an update. I just read 17 pages of your build and must say, Thank you for your effort on this. It would be sweet to see a dyno graph on this rig, seems to have good power low in the rpm range.:sly;Sweet Hope the back is feeling better as well.

I know. I was just messing with you and figured I'd point out the obvious... :D
