Hi guys I got a new truck over the weekend. It is a 1984 6.9 with a c6. I am looking at Turbo kits for her and was wondering how much boost each will produce. I like the hypermax for low price but I don't think it will produce as much as the banks. Any input as to which to get.

They both will make plenty of boost for a stock IDI. However, the nongated Hypermax may be a bit more laggy than the wastegated Banks. It really boils down to if you want a wastegated or non-wastegated turbo.

Seems to me that Hypermax is the only company that still takes an interest in our old trucks. Although I kinda like the banks setup a little better, I think Hypermax will be the best bet when it comes to needing help should a future problem arise.

banks is still in full production too.you can call right up and order a full kit,to any small part you want.just for thier latest waste gated turbo of course.no longer selling the discontinued one,or parts.though most parts might be the same anyway actually lol i dunno.
i bought a used waste gate sidewinder and called to order parts.very helpful and shipped 'em right out.

where do you guys find the brand new banks units? are they listed on there website?

all over the net.yes they're sold directly from banks and on their site too.
pricey new though.2500-3k+ because the kit comes with the E40D trans command and full exhaust.
i asked banks on the phone if he'd sell minus those two parts and he said yes.however the price matched an online vendor selling the whole kit for about the same $ anyway........that's when i went used.:D

Look on ebay for a place in Torrance Ca selling new complete Banks turbo kits cheaper than what Banks can sell them for. The seller has been listing them for some time too.

So you guys think the hypermax can pull 16 psi? The engine will have a set of studs to keep the heads on.

If you have a good fuel system yes.
I love my hypermax kit. Very easy install. And with the slightly larger exhaust wheel drive pressure is probally better on it too.

Wasn't Mel hitting something like 17 before he backed off on his hypermax kit when he installed his moose pump?

I have one of the pre-Sidewinder, non-wastegated turbos ... the first gen type. Installed it in '87. It's been reliable but on the few occasions lately when I asked about replacement exhaust pieces, I was very disappointed to find Banks doesn't carry anything for it. They will reproduce the exhaust parts from blueprints for an OBSCENE amount of money. I suppose I shouldn't be miffed, given I bought the system 25 years ago.

Wastegated vers non... if you tow hard go with a non-wastegated. Lower drive pressure and EGTs under load for the most part. If you want the low end acceleration, get the wastegated.

I think it's a mistake to just look at boost pressure as the end-all. In order to use 17 psi boost, you gotta make a lot of other mods. Better to look for a specific power output and build around that. IMO, most well built stockish engine can make 250 flywheel hp (about 200 RW) pretty easily and without a fancy pump. All the boost you need for that is around 10psi. Head studs recommended but not absolutely needed in the short term (possibly long term reliability issues , however). Above that, the next 50 hp gets a lot more expensive. Would everybody agree that about 300 flywheel is pretty much "it" for a street driven engine when you don't have unlimited funds? I have seen very few engine dyno numbers on the IDIs and RWHP has so many variables that translateing them to flywheel power is an exercise in blurry futility. I do know that back in the day, Banks gave me information, a dyno graph, that showed their first gen kit produced 256 flywheel hp @ 3300 (as tested on an engine dyno) and 530 lbs-ft @ 1500. That on a non-wastegated Rotomaster 'charger making 10 psi boost. With some exhaust mods, my truck will make as much as 14 now but I'm not fixated on that as any sort of a benchmark.

Is it possible to mod the Hypermax turbo like it is the ATS?

I would imagine so being it is a Garret charger.
I dot rember the guys name but there's a guy on here with a hypermax turbo. Said he had done a few things to it including a new .82 exhaust wheel from the original 1.15.

I've seem the TO4B69's(Hypermax's Turbo) offered with 1.00 AR's on their hot side. I'm kinda currious if that would be a happy medium for the non-wastegated turbo systems.

The biggest problem that most non-turbo'd IDI owners are going to run into is that Hypermax is going to be the only company out there that will have an aftermarket turbo system...period.

what makes you predict the end of production of banks prior to hypermax?

I'll have to look...but I had thought I had read Banks was discontinuing their IDI products.

If I'm wrong I'll have to eat crow on that one.

But then again who would have thought ATS was ever going to stop production either.
