I got sent on a last minute training session at work today...It was for Ford 6.0L and 6.4L diesel maintenance - the do's and don'ts for the newer PSD's put on by a Navistar engineer.....I also got my hands on a new 6.7L for an up close look.:sly....390HP, 735ftlbs-Drool...Pretty fancy (read: expensive) looking engine and big too.

In our discussions we talked about cetane boosters - Ford recommends them for all their diesels right back to the IDI. The engineer said that the current pump diesel is has a cetane rating of about 37-40, the cetane booster Ford sells will bump it to 47 if mixed according to the directions....Less smoke (soot), 1-3 more MPG's and more power. I explained the smoke issue I have discovered with the new IP and injectors in my 6.9, he said the booster will help some.:dunno....I bought some Power Service booster tonight to try it. He recommended not to use any boosters with an alcohol base - I'm not sure what the PS stuff has for a base. The Ford booster has no alcohol.

As for the tips to long trouble free live's for your 6.0 and 6.4's....DO NOT use anything other than the correct Ford coolant that the engine came with and use Ford fuel/oil filters at the manufacturer recommended intervals.....They showed us the numbers for large fleets who follow and don't follow the Ford service criteria - the cost savings for the good owners was crazy over what too little maintenance will cost you in EGR valves, EGR coolers, oil coolers and injectors. They made a point of showing us a local fleets service program right here in Halifax - ambulances - the down time for breakdowns was nil to none and as a result so was the "customer pay" repair bills.;Sweet....I got 2 nice Powerstroke Diesel hat's out of the deal too.:sly

BigRig,

Did you get any books or manuals on the 6.0? I know that I have been very "****" about the maintenance on my 6.0 and it turn it has not let me down. 5k on oil with Motorcraft filter and oil and 10k on the fuel with Motorcraft filters. Looking at the records I think mine was dealer maintained until I bought it, and it was only in for a couple of things, one was a no-start due to a coolant leak into a module.... I have had it in once for a PCM/FICM Update..... so I do whole-heartdly believe that maintenance is the key. I am close to the coolant service interval....and I will be buying the $16 a gallon coolant from Ford.... I have no problem spending a little more on the maintenance supplies, since that has been the only expence that I have had..... I think the water pump I think is starting to weep, and I am very seriously leaning to getting the replacement from Ford, since I want to change it only once, since it looks like it will not be fun..... I may do both at the same time, that way it is only one coolant change....

As for the booster, I have used Power Service in mine since I bought it..... I can tell a difference in power, and engine sound. It does seem to help.

If those are the same Powerstroke hats that I'm thinking of they are made in China anyways.

Also I'm looking forward to the day that the 6.7's show up on the local dealer lot :D I'll be test driving one as soon as I can get my hands on it.

The hat's are just Ford Powerstroke diesel logo's....Nice hat's, not cheap ones. I got a nice book on the 6.4's, they didn't have any 6.0 books left. The 6.7 is a pretty fancy looking piece up close, I saw one in a 2011 F250 4x4 they had there - you can hardly see it in there....:rolleyes:cookoo:puke: I bought some cetane booster to try in the 6.9.

Check this out saw it on facebook. its a real test of a 6.7 vs a cumapart and a duracrap. Hahaha I love in the begining the disclamer says "trailer weight limited to 9xxx lbs because of the ram towing limits". My only problem is a) no black smoke and b) no "diesel" sound

Any idiot can make a powerful engine when you have the backing and funding of a detroit motor company. My test of a good engine is measured in years, not power or torque exclusively.

As far as I'm concened the power is impressive but that is to be expected. Frankly a chipped 7.3L could easily reach those numbers and still get darn good economy. Its longevity that will decide if the engine is really that good.

Fuel economy? Every single diesel engine ever offered claimed to have better fuel economy than it's predecessor - results didn't always live up to the hype. Somebody please pass the salt.;Really

Sorry for the rant.

I see trailer loads of the '11 models rolling in every day, they are pretty pieces if you ask me. I only have two beefs about them.

Too many automatics

Engine is made in Mexico.

The reversing of the intake and exhaust should have been done when our motors were designed in the late '70's. Way better layout for turbo.
