This has been bouncing around in the back of my head for a bit...

After noticing that the turbo IDI's have a .81 A/R turbine housing, and also noticing that you really have to wring them out to hit your max boost...has anyone tried swapping to something like a .63 housing?

Just curious, as I know .63 Stage III housings are readily available, and I wonder what sort of performance that would deliver.

I don't know much about much about IDI turbo's specifically, but I've been researching turbos for another project. I'm thinking that you may run out of boost in the upper RPM range. However, off the line, it would spool up pretty quick.

Also, I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Well, that's what I was figuring, the boost would probably fall off at upper RPM's.

But, hell, my truck doesn't seem to like upper RPM's right now anyway, as I can feel it get slower once the RPM's get up there (I really need to replace my tach sender, my tach is broken).

after the install of my IC, the only high RPM fall-off I noticed was when I hit the governor. Before IC, it fell off around 3k rpm.

thats funny. going to a smaller housing would help with the low end boost and lag. just like the psd's going from the 1.15 to 1.00 housing for quicker spool up.

FWIW, the non gated Banks I used to have on my 6.9 was a T04B with a 1.00 A/R on the exhaust housing, so, it really didn't do anything impressive below 2300 or so. I wanted to drop it down into the .6 or so range, but never got around to it.

I'm planning to do a front mount IC at some point...might order everything over the winter and work on it in the spring.

I'm not sure if I really feel like taking the turbo off again, even if I did want to play with turbine housing size...did it once, don't care to again. blah.

The .63, if they made the correct one for our turbos, would induce overspeed at high rpm,s even with a wastegate.

Eh, figured I'd ask....thought it might be too small since a .63 Stage III (behind a 57 trim compressor) on my Thunderbird can get boost at 2500 RPM or so, and that's on a 2.3L four cylinder.

Weren't you running a .63, Russ?

If not, what are you running, and how are you liking it?

my turbine is a stock ats, the compressor is a super 60 wheel, just a bit bigger.
