The converter in the AT545 is a non lock up converter and in my application and load has about 20-25% inefficency. At 55 MPH with the Automatic it is at 2350 to 2400 rpm. And that is after putting a tighter converter in the truck. The stock converter was about 150 rpm higher. The factory specs list a load limit of 22,050 # with the AT545 Transmission. With the tire size and gear ratio I have it will be at 1900 RPM @55MPH with the Manual transmission. Most of my driving is on the Interstate with a trailer so the Shifting will not be any major difference.
The converter reacts to input power and the load it sees. As either of those go up the efficency goes down. It may work fine for an Intown delivery truck or School Bus, This was a common Transmission in Busses for years. But for On the Highway pulling a trailer it is not the best choice.
This weekend will be the maiden voyage pulling the trailer. I am looking forward to seeing the results of a lot of work.
Here is the truck hooked up to the trailer for the maiden voyage.
