Do you think the air leak could be at the injection pump itself or caused by the unit failing? So when a new rebuilt one is in then that cold start fuel drain back issue will be solved? I have noticed a fair amount of fuel wetness on top of the engine block under where the injector lines feed...
Makes sense. I still can't wrap my head around how the IP could be failing or almost shot and truck still runs strong and smooth. No real noticeable difference after timing was advanced as much as possible. Perhaps once I install a new pump is when I will clearly notice a difference in...
Long time no post so here's an update! Took the truck to a shop here in Sacramento, Ken Imler's Performance Diesel. Very impressed with their knowledge of the older diesel light/med. duty trucks and fair not scamming for extra repairs etc..Ken has been there working day to day for over 25 years...
All noted here ... to be honest I wish I had a simple clear wiring diagram for this system, FSS power-in, timing advance switch and sending unit. I may need to re-wire all that stuff. And yes thanks James for the warning to watch it when loosening or tightening that tough passenger side bolt...
Ok I may give it a shot @IDIBRONCO ... should I just youtube it to get the timing repair procedure down?
I promise I will not bring this up again but see in this picture what I think is what you call the fast idle solenoid, it has that brass pin that holds the throttle open a little when cold...
Thank you for the replies @IDIBRONCO so it's safe to say the timing will need to be advanced some? Is this a difficult operation for a fair to moderately skilled wrencher like myself, Is there is a good thread on here with instructions or should I look somewhere else...? Do you agree that other...
Yep my bad, I realize now it would only be hot when cranking starter ... ok I was just wondering if that other switch on top of the FSS was critical to get the right about of fuel to injectors when cold. ok if not that's good.
..and I knew this was coming ... arghh! no sir in fact I was pretty...
Thanks James. So can't I connect to the side of the relay that is hot only in start position?
I would agree with you on some sort of fuel issue but the truck runs strong and healthy always has except for a few years back when I needed to replace the injectors, been all good ever since. ...
Welp I'm still running the hard wire from battery to FSS. Seemed to be working fine for now until I can permanently fix the wiring (**see below, I tried!) ... Now I am experiencing randomly every 4 or 5 cold start attempts the very same symptoms as before installing the manual gp harness kit ...
ok I hooked up a semi-permanent fused wire from battery to FSS spade ... pain in the ass to attach on and off every time of course but the truck starts perfectly fast cold and runs strong. Now I know 2 things, the manual gp harness and switch I installed works and that I need to run a new wire...
Interesting. so while it's running leave key in on position and go under under hood and disconnect? then back to cab to turn key off?
thanks @Rdnck84_03
ok got it. the red arrow in my last picture is where the power comes into the FSS correct? I found my test light finally and there indeed is NO power in that wire with the key on. therefore it's not powering the FSS as normal. Is it feasible to actually power up the FSS with the jump wire...
@IDIBRONCO any recommendations for next steps in trying to solve this sucker ... FSS seems good. still not getting fuel as you mentioned from the IP but the return lines spit fuel so the lift pump seems good as you mentioned before ... must not be getting power to the IP huh?
mornin follow up! this thing is wracking my brain and I'm not great with electrical stuff ... is the best way to test that female end that connects to the pump solenoid, turn key on and ground a test light and touch the inside of the connector to see if it lights up? just want to double check if...
Howdy I'm back with an update ... tested the FSS with key on, disconnected wire and reconnected it, NO CLICK. then ran a roach clip jump wire from positive battery terminal to the spade on FSS solenoid .. CLICK! so the FSS seems to be good right? please study pics ... sorry for this electrical...
hmmm ok interesting, still seems like I screwed something up when I disconnected the old controller. There was a wire from ignition to that stock relay of course... with that disconnected and going nowhere now I wonder if an old owner had tied the FSS wire into that wire so they didn't have to...
Thank you both! Not with the truck at the moment but now I'm wondering if I cut that wire when I clipped the group of wires from the OE gp controller! I'll study that plastic loom and wiring when I get a chance ... does the FSS wire go directly to the battery? What is the cold start advance...
About my 1993 7.3 idi w/turbo ...Well, I thought I could use the block heater to bypass glow plug system. I'll try to be a brief as possible here to explain ... first time using it ..Plugged in block heater for about 2-3 hrs. on a relatively warm 60 degrees F evening... I could hear the buzzing...
I hesitate to go full on block heater/no glowplug power to start the thing because it doesn't really get that cold where I live, just thought then I don't have to deal with replacing the gp parts every year or two ...
...what is a self limiting plug? I installed a button on my older '85 6.9...
