    4x4 Front Axle Service Write-Ups

For a 1984 F250, 6.9L 4X4; I sent my front ball joints into the great beyond earlier this year, hubs blew their grease seals a while ago, and my rotors look like vinyl records. I finally have the time to start working on it, but I'm not too sure what all should be replaced. I've seen a few...

Wiring Conundrum(s) II. : Brake Lights and Oil Pressure

The turbo sensor is factory and was already threaded in when I bought all the pieces. I guess I should have asked if there was a way to determine whether or not the oil pressure sensor was bad or if the spliced sensor wire was the issue.

Wiring Conundrum(s) II. : Brake Lights and Oil Pressure

The wire is still wired the same way it was when the engine was N/A and worked as intended. The only modification I made was splicing in the longer segment that came with the turbo so that the wire cap can reach the post on the sensor.

Wiring Conundrum(s) I. : Busted GPs and Tachometer

For symptoms, it will start hard starting after a few days or won't start without excessive effort. Each time I've determined bad plugs using a multimeter and a test light, most of the plugs read too much resistance and/or won't light the tester. I've tried to determine if there's voltage being...

Wiring Conundrum(s) II. : Brake Lights and Oil Pressure

Truck in question is a 1984 6.9 - Brake Lights The PO removed the trailer brake wiring and ended up wrecking the rear lights circuit. I tore out the (complete) harness that included break lights and functioning trailer plugs off of a bricknose and have been thinking about grafting it in. The...

Wiring Conundrum(s) I. : Busted GPs and Tachometer

Truck in question is a 1984 6.9 -GPs I'm not sure what the issue is, but my glow plugs burn out within a week of installation. After replacing them the first time I got about a week out of them before 6~ out of the 8 plugs went bad, which were then replaced again with similar results. My plugs...

    Axles, Suspension, and funny noises.

I had each side jacked up and the driver front was the only one that had any vertical play, by quite a lot. Neither had horizontal play. Unfortunately, this was done as a parking-lot appraisal by a shop in ID after I realized something was wrong with the suspension. The tech looking over my...

    Axles, Suspension, and funny noises.

It’s a 84 250 4x4 with the twin I beam. I can’t tell exactly where the leak is coming from on the driver front, but it hasn’t done it in a while. The only time I watched it actively happen was when I was getting the truck off of its blocks. I didn’t have jack stands or a floor jack, so I just...

    Axles, Suspension, and funny noises.

Successfully made another 1800+ mile drive to college and am pleased to say my handiwork did not annihilate the truck. Unfortunately, there are now new issues I’m not sure how to fix. My front axle had been leaking since before I left and only trickled out gear oil onto the interior of the...

Laramie, WY - No Crank/No Start, just solenoid clicking

Already a few hundred miles into a 1800+mile trip to college and the truck decided to call it a night in Laramie. No preceding electrical issues that I know of. Shut it off to get fuel and now running ignition just results in clicking. My multimeter doesn’t seem to be working, and I’m not a...

Trying to fabricate a CDR mount for turbo swap

Nearing the end of the swap, which has been a garbage fire from the get-go. Now all I have left, besides welding the firewall, floorpan, and misc., is making a CDR mount for the ATS-style factory turbo setup. I haven’t been able to find engineer drawings or anything, so I was wondering if anyone...

    ZF5 Swap: Cross Member Tomfoolery

They do like up and I tried them out, but the bracket from the ZF5 places the t-case into the floor again. Although I believe the t-19 member sits lower in the frame, it’s only by a negligible amount. I’m not really sure how high up the output of the t-case should be, but I could measure for the...

    ZF5 Swap: Cross Member Tomfoolery

After exhausting both the ratchet-strap and skid steer methods of installing a trans, I finally borrowed a jack and got it in. Only issue now is cross member fitment/selection, and how to secure the mounting bracket with only one usable bolt. The threaded mounts on the ZF5 were already pretty...

    Unconventional CDR Mounting Ideas

Been gathering components for a turbo and ZF5 install on my 84’ 6.9 and every time I turn around, I’ve forgotten another important part/system. This time it’s the CDR. I got a complete ATS093 style turbo setup, but no turbo valve covers. I haven’t found any listing for valve covers that...

Clutch Kit Suggestions for ZF5 Swap

I’d greatly appreciate it if you could send the link for the clutch kit you mentioned, I’ve only seen kits in the $300+ range so far in my searching. I did see a swap video where the old flywheel plate swapped over with no hassle. Worst case scenario, I bastardize it with a torch and make it...

Clutch Kit Suggestions for ZF5 Swap

I’ve finally gotten my hands on a ZF5 and turbo for my truck, and it’s left me with a tight budget. After searching through a few threads, it seems like there isn’t much consensus on what all can be re-used in the process. With that being said, I’m trying to get a parts list together for the...

    West Coast to Midwest Route Suggestions - N/A 6.9L T-18/19, 4.10s

My term is coming to an end, which means I need to start mentally preparing for the drive home. I initially drove from IA to OR via I80 to I84 to I5, but it was a rough going and not at all ideal with no overdrive, no pyrometer, and 4.10s. I know I'm not going to be able to avoid grade changes...

Trying to upgrade DD on a budget

I might be willing to take you up on that offer, but I’ve got a few other options I’m checking out at the moment. I’ll certainly be in contact if the opportunity arises

    Trustworthy repair shops in OR?

Sorry for the late response, been slogging through the end of the term. I’ve got no illusion about driving the truck back to Iowa for break, no need to rush trying to find the right pieces for the right price. I’ll be back again around the beginning of January

Trying to upgrade DD on a budget

I’ve already asked around and I don’t think doing the swap in the parking lot will be an option given EPA on spilled fluids and liability. To add insult to injury, the engineering college I pay out of state for has zilch in terms of automotive shops or student resources. Real shame, I was half...

Trying to upgrade DD on a budget

Local junk yards are set to be my next haunt when I’ve got time between classes. I’ve tried searching IDIs by 87-94, and even 1st gen 7.3 PSDs, but it seems like online sellers have gotten savvier. Might check classifieds/auctions if I can find a newspaper

Trying to upgrade DD on a budget

I’m not opposed to the plane ticket idea, and have it as a plan B given I can’t get anything done before Dec. 10ish. The only issue is finding what to do with the truck while I’m gone for roughly a month. I don’t have any friends/family remotely nearby, and I brought what few earthly possessions...

Trying to upgrade DD on a budget

Any places I should be paying attention to? Getting the trans itself is one thing, trying to gather up all the necessary parts to swap out a t-18 seems to be a whole other journey. I’ve researched rebuild kits for a t-18, could definitely be a good option, but might take away from the budget if...

Trying to upgrade DD on a budget

It’s 4x4, so that does hinder things. I considered re-gearing the rear and disconnecting the front drive shaft, but it’s not exactly a net gain as you mentioned. I’ve found a few ZF5s, but I’m not sure if they have all of the components necessary to do the swap. Given how much they cost...

Trying to upgrade DD on a budget

Recently I’ve been diving down the rabbit hole on marketplace trying to find turbo-kits and ZF5s in the hopes that I can drive the 1800 miles home from college come winter break. My N/A 1984 is currently equipped with 4.10s, a t-18 with no synchros, one half-working front tank, and bad air...
