Connecting rod broke below the piston. Looking for ideas on cause.

Gotcha. I at least feel better that I know what happened now. I was running the sca additive but using the factory temp gauge. And I dont know the history of the engine so the last owner may not have run it. The temp gauge seemed to work alright but I wouldn't put it past it to not show...

Also, how do I diagnose that in the future. Engine seemed to run fine. Smoked a little on cold start but once warm the exhaust looked normal. You could only see a puff of black at loaded full throttle on a hot day so it wasn't being masked. I just want to be able to notice this and prevent...

Thewespaul how do you tell? The color? Forgive my ignorance. I don't have too much experience with diagnosing failure. The head gasket was in good shape, I'm fairly confident it wasn't leaking.

The black one is a good cylinder. All 7 look like this one. The random scuffs are from the work bench. The round one is from the valve.

Thanks for the replies guys! I think I'm still going to switch to the gasser and save this 7.3 (non turbo) for another project that won't see such hard offroad use (my uncle recently gave me a 64 f250 in need of some tlc). The 390 I'm going through has 428 scj rods so they should hold up. It's...

Connecting rod broke below the piston. Looking for ideas on cause.

I've had a 7.3 idi in my truck for about a year now. All stock except for the "bowl" cut out of the intake and the fuel screw turned up two flats. I have a pyro on it and it never peaks above 900 degrees. 1975 F250 "high-boy". It usually stays at dads farm and gets used off road with the...

Thanks! Sorry, I dont get on here often. Everything has a price. My personal value on this just happens to be more than what anyone would (should) be willing to pay for it. When you get one and start the swap don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have. Its straight forward, just labor...

Nope. The power steering components were gone when I bought the truck. I'm told it was a crappy system anyway. The box wasn't in the way so I never touched it.

The crossmember that has to be notched. Engine bolted up and hung in place for motor mount fab. Angle iron motor mounts. I avoided welding over the FE mount bolt holes in case I decide to convert back to gas. Please excuse the bird s**t welds. If you decide to do this conversion please don't...

I used the 7.3 mounts. The 360 cradle mounts unbolted from the highboy frame and I took the cradle mounts from the 1984 pickup and bolted them to the 7.3 mounts on the engine, bolted it to the transmission and hung it in place with the engine hoist and used angle iron to fab up the frame mounts...

1975 Ford 3/4 ton "Highboy". Truck originally had a 360 FE, swapped it to 6.9 idi out of an 84 F250 years ago, a friend blew the engine while I was away for a few years. Swapped a 7.3 idi back into it last December. I used the 6.9 pump on the 7.3 so I doubt its timed right. Pyro installed and...
