What did you do with your diesel conversion today?

Success! After 2 filter changes in about 1,000 miles total, the coolant looks nice and clean.

    Glow Plug for Intake Heater?

When I swapped the 5.9 Cummins into my Ford bus I eliminated the grid heater for top clearance. Now I think I could use some intake heat for cold weather starting, but have no room for the original grid heater. If I drilled and tapped the intake horn to fit a Champion 167 glow plug and wired...

    1990 Ford Bronco 4BT swap

It's really easy to setup. I've been using the Quick 1 for several years but I have been considering going to the Quick 4.

    1990 Ford Bronco 4BT swap

Have you looked into the US Shift controller? I think it's available for an E4OD trans. I run one in my Cobra (4R70W) and it works great. Real simple to work with.

I agree with contacting Jason at trans tuner. VERY sharp guy! Just tuned my 5R110 in my bus this Winter. It's great.

    Cummins into 1996 E-SuperDuty Bus

Its strange but I get as much enjoyment driving the bus as I do the Cobra.

    Cummins into 1996 E-SuperDuty Bus

In a nutshell, I had to gut the bus floor out and fabricate a rectangular tube floor frame to support the weight of the Cobra. The aluminum ramps stand on edge on either side of the car against the side walls. Since the pictures were taken, I have removed the original seats and replaced them...

I have transformed it into a Cobra hauler.

Also been doing some paintwork. So far I have painted all of the bus body. Still have the front to do, but decided to wait a while.

What did you do with your diesel conversion today?

I installed a coolant filter. It really cleaned up the water. Ever since I got this engine running the coolant has been dirty looking (maybe from setting up for several years?) Even after a couple of flushes and Cascade it still had a dirty look. No oil, just dirt. I think I will drive it...

    Cummins into 1996 E-SuperDuty Bus

Now I have about 3,000 miles on my conversion. I really like the results. The 5R110 transmission works great, good cold A/C, engine power is decent, bus now gets about 13-14 mpg (up from 7-8). Some day I may turn the pump up a little more but its good for now. I installed a coolant filter and in...

    Cummins into 1996 E-SuperDuty Bus

This has become one of my favorite projects. I probably would have been better off swapping in a 7.3 diesel, but I don't think I would like the results as much as I do with the current setup. This bus rocks!!!

    Cummins into 1996 E-SuperDuty Bus

I finally figured out the speed control problem. Too much throttle return spring pressure for the servo to overcome. Between the spring in the APPS on the pedal, the spring built in to the Ford cable, the spring on the throttle pivot on the engine, the little springs hooked to the timing cover...

    Cummins into 1996 E-SuperDuty Bus

Got everything working well except for the speed control. When I engage it, it seems to hold, but loses speed very slowly until it kicks out at about 40mph. The accel and coast buttons are not working. Everything worked fine before the swap. I changed the speed sensor in the rear end to a new...

    Cummins into 1996 E-SuperDuty Bus

For some reason, the turbo quit leaking oil. Maybe sitting on the shelf it had some trash in the seals that had to work out after a couple of heat cycles??? Beats me. I really like the way this thing runs. The transmission tuning has been going well. After several different tunes, it really...

    Cummins into 1996 E-SuperDuty Bus

I will probably pull the turbo off and have it gone through this week. All I have left are a few details to finish up. I installed the rest of the Autometer gauges today. Oil pressure, water temp, voltmeter, trans temp, pyrometer, and boost gauges. That along with the stock gauges should be...

    Cummins into 1996 E-SuperDuty Bus

No leaks at all from the engine and no oil from the vent tube on the drivers side. My oil drip is showing up at the exhaust downpipe V-band clamp on the turbo. After idling an hour or so there are 2 or 3 drops on the driveway. Turbo is a used HE351 I bought. Don't really know any history about it.

    Cummins into 1996 E-SuperDuty Bus

Sometimes I overlook the simple stuff! I replaced the new oil pressure sending unit with the old, leaking one. Now The gauge works! Guess I never let it run long enough for the temp gauge to register. I installed a temporary gauge along with the factory gauge. After 45 minutes, the gauge moved...

Very nice. It's satisfying to make progress on these projects.

Still no oil and temp gauges. I have power and ground to the cluster but still have something missing. Everything worked fine before the swap.
  23. D

    Cummins into 1996 E-SuperDuty Bus

The cluster in it is from a 1992 F350 IDI. That should work? According to the 1996 van shop manual, there is no mention of the gauges being controlled by the PCM. I'm thinking they only pass through.

    Cummins into 1996 E-SuperDuty Bus

Anyone know if I can bypass the PCM and wire the gauges direct to the sending units?
  25. D

    Cummins into 1996 E-SuperDuty Bus

That wasn't the problem. When I replaced that wire, it has 12v in the start position. Gotta keep looking. I wish I knew what I was looking for.
