leaky injetors /IP
The plastic caps when installed over the o-rings on top of the injectors, will rotate very easily until secured with the return lines and return line clamps. They should not spin or come off the top of the injector easily, though.- artfd

Before My Eyes... FL784 Fails!
WM got rid of all their FL784 filters years ago at similar sales. There is no reason to think a filter would go bad in storage. I suppose if the filter had been dropped onto a hard surface, it might be damaged internally & later fail in the way you observed. I never heard of a MC recall on...- artfd

I wouldn't be concerned. Your problem in Moscow ID is more likely to be intermittent severe cold temps interfering with starting (but not in running). If you pay attention to temps in the cold season and can plug in a block heater when it's appropriate, you should not have a problem...- artfd

Getting my spare pump rebuilt. Who to go with?
Bench testing on most automotive 12VDC solenoids should give an audible or palpable "click" indicated the internal relay's mechanism has made something move. Whether or not the timing has actually been advanced in an operating engine is another, although related, matter.- artfd

In my experience water in fuel show up now & again. I've driven my '83 all over the country. Very rarely I would have the 'water in fuel' light come on several times over the period of a week. For the last 18 years, no indication of water, and nothing would drain out of the separator...- artfd

This is an old thread, but I learned something from it. In 2002 my '83's fuel water separator gave up the ghost when I attempted to open the cheap plastic valve to drain it, and found the valve in pieces in my hand. At that time I looked for a substitute & was able to use a Racor PF829B...- artfd

Removing the injection pump
I would think that any visible damage to the tips of the hard lines would mean they have to be replaced. I was lucky to find an '85 6.9L at a local pullapart, scavenged its hard lines on general principles, after I learned they cost $48 new [each] but were engineered to last the life of the...- artfd

New starter, what a difference!
I have heard that North Dakotans use their block heaters pretty regularly when temps go below -20F or so for hours at a time. Hope the weather there is a lot warmer than that when you visit the place.- artfd
