Best setup for towing/nontowing power and MPG.

I only use 5th gear on the interstate. Every where else (55mph speed limit), I leave it in 4th.

    should i touch the fuel?

Mine will only get to about 850 unloaded. Once I hook the 5er up, it will creep up past 1000 pretty easily. Highest temp I've hit on a long hill is 1070 with the throttle matted for the entire length of the hill.

Best setup for towing/nontowing power and MPG.

I run the same size tires but with 4.10 gears, and in my opinion, the gear ratio is a perfect compromise between towing power / fuel mileage. When I tow my 5er, 2300 rpm (roughly 70mph) is a decent cruise RPM, but for any kind of hill, I'm shifting down to 4th. Unloaded it isn't nearly as...

    Hello All

Welcome from a fellow Oregonian. There's quite a few of us here; most from the Portland area. 1 thing no one pointed out yet; you're 87 should have a ZF5 trans in it? I second Oregon Fuel Injection; I've been there and they seem to be good people to deal with. FWIW, they quoted me $50...

Champion aluminum radiator specifications, including comparison to OEM

I switched out the leaky stock radiator for one of these about 6 months ago. I also put a turbo on my truck right about the same time (which adds more heat to the equation) Towing my 10k pound trailer before and after the aluminum radiator+turbo combination resulted in my coolant temps...

    Good idea, COLD air intake

Just food for thought; The Auber instruments EGT gauge that I and some others are running has a programmable limit built in. It triggers a LED light on the gauge, and also trips a built in relay that could be used to engage the CO2 setup. Would be a pretty neat, hands free setup.

Enough of the Road Draft Tube Already!

I ran mine into the end of my downpipe. It still has a little bit of smoke out of the exhaust, but it's way better than having the hose hanging down through the front suspension. Although you would require a pretty long hose with your remote mount turbo setup.

    Started my DT360 swap yesterday

Dang it, you need to get some more power out of that, you're making me second guess own Dt360 swap. You still running the stock turbo? And I'm curious about the ag balancer as well. The way it looks right now, the tranny would have to move back about 4" just for the balancer and pulleys to...

    Brownie X2!!!

Mine has 35" tires and weighs slightly more. Even with the rear end on it's last leg (literally went up in smoke on the last trip), I get about 10mpg hauling my 10k pound fiver and driving like I stole it to the coast and back.

Brownie points for anyone that can figure this out .

Probably a system that pressure increases with engine speed. That's why you can't find it with the engine idling. Just food for thought; I had a leak on the top of my radiator - at idle it would just drip down the front of the radiator, but after driving it, the wind would blow the coolant...

Aluminum ebay rads to stay away from

Also factor in that the old radiator is worth about $50 or more at the scrap yard... I bought A Champion radiator off of Ebay. It bolted right in. But the screw in bungs for the trans cooler were bent when I got it. I called Champion before I bought mine; they quoted me a much higher price...

Short/Long Pinion Sterlings use differnt length driveshafts?

So I slept on it and woke up the next day with a revelation; I didn't have the shocks hooked up yet, and the rear axle was hanging from the truck, suspended by the leaf springs. I was stuck in the mindset that the rear axle moved straight up and down, with no forward and back movement. This...

Short/Long Pinion Sterlings use differnt length driveshafts?

I'm going to crawl under it tomorrow to make sure. And the driveshaft is now too long, not too short. I did just recently grease the hell out of the slip yoke, so there's a chance there's enough grease that it won't compress it, but it does look to be pretty close to the end of it's...

Short/Long Pinion Sterlings use differnt length driveshafts?

Just a little thinking out loud here; With the truck sitting on jacks under the frame rails and the rear end hanging from the leaf springs (resulting in the rear axle sitting about 6" lower than ride height), the rear driveline still won't quite go short enough to fit into it's yoke. And the...

Short/Long Pinion Sterlings use differnt length driveshafts?

There only appears to be about 1/2" of difference between the 2 rear ends, but it was just enough to bite me in the ass. After searching the local Craigslist and car-part.com, there's a couple of the short pinion (87-92) driveshafts close to me, no dice on the long pinion version (93-97)...

Short/Long Pinion Sterlings use differnt length driveshafts?

So here's my situation; Some of you may remember a recent thread of mine that told the tale of the rear end in my truck going up in smoke (literally!) So I sourced a new(er) long pinion Sterling 10.25 with limited slip out of a 94 as a replacement. Tonight I went to bolt up the...

    Dana 70 or Sterling 10.25?

Got er drug home.....limited slip it is. Good thing the JY didn't catch it, they would have charged more for it. Also came with some kind of Monroe load leveling shocks (they have springs on em), U-bolts, plates, blocks, and sway bar.

    Dana 70 or Sterling 10.25?

Limited slip would be a nice bonus, but I'm used to the peg leg that was in there, I'll find out when I pick it up tomorrow AM. Either way, I got a good deal because I found it within a mile of my house - and I have to use my truck with the mangled rear end in it to get it home. I put the cover...

    Dana 70 or Sterling 10.25?

Bought a new (used) Sterling this morning. $200 at a junkyard about 1 mile from my house. It's out of a 94 - so it's the better pinion setup which I was after since that appears to be what killed mine. Axle code on the truck is C5; which I believe is 4.10 gears and posi. I'll pick it up...

    Dana 70 or Sterling 10.25?

I took the cover off of mine today for a look-see...... Still had quite a bit of gear oil in it (and boy did it smell good!), although there was definitely a good spray coming off of the pinion and coating the whole underside of the truck. I can also see a bunch of splatter radiating out across...

Center Support Bearing (Drive Shaft) size

Mine uses the smaller of the two, but that's because it has the sissy sized C6 driveshaft in it. Auto driveshafts are smaller in diameter and use smaller Ujoints than the ZF5 driveshaft (rear only). With the ZF5, I would guess it's the bigger version

    swap gas for idi

I think he meant the other way around.... I did it to my truck in my drive way; not particularly difficult, just labor intensive, and WAY easier if you have a complete donor truck.

    Crazy idea... Maybe

A fully dressed IDI weighs almost half as much as that Falcon. Might not handle so great. Maybe a smaller/lighter diesel?
