    Fuel tank vent hose

I was reading Zaggnutt's thread about the tank removal and I had a question about the vent hose is pictured coming off the top of the tank. For both tanks, the hose is cracked where that cap on the end goes, and thus the cap will barely stay on. I noticed this the other week when working on the...

    Suggestions/help with clear line test

One thing I forgot to mention yesterday is that after I took the video, while the engine was running, I switched tanks while the engine was running to make sure that the FSV is operating correctly. I saw a few air bubbles after it started drawing fuel from the other tank(I haven't used the rear...

    Suggestions/help with clear line test

So as requested, I did a video of a clear line test with the water separator bypassed. This video was taken right after a cold start. About halfway through, the fast idle switches off, and at that point there is a small stream of bubbles that come out of the line from the filter head, but then...

    Starter and oil leak question

I'm pretty sure it's the starter itself. When I was cranking it the other day, I never cranked it long enough for the starter to get hot enough to burn oil. The starter accumulates a good amount of oil, and even though I clean it off every now and then, I know all that oil can't be good for it...

    Starter and oil leak question

There are no visible signs of leakage in the fuel system that I can see. I will take a look around the valley pan and see if anything is leaking up there. Thanks for that tip, it makes sense now why I only see leaks under the passenger side of the truck.

    Starter and oil leak question

Yeah, from what I can tell, I do have a little bit of oil seepage from the heads, but I don't think that's where the main leak is. I know that at some point I will have to do the head gaskets, right now I live in an apartment complex so that is out of the question as well of any likelyhood of...

    Starter and oil leak question

Last weekend when I was working on my fuel system, I was turning the engine over for ~5-10 with a remote starter switch and noticed there was smoke coming from the starter. I think the starter must be about to die, because there is an oil leak somewhere near where the starter is and the starter...

    Suggestions/help with clear line test

The factory water separator was replaced with a Racor separator long before I bought the truck. I do need to replace the hose going to and from it though, so I can do a still do a vid if you think bypassing it would provide and useful info.

    Suggestions/help with clear line test

So I finally had some time today to start working on my truck. My initial goal was to do some clear line tests and see if any air is getting in the fuel lines. I didn't feel like taking the square banks air filter box off today, so I was just going to run a clear line from the lift pump to the...

To bad it's not an IDI. I noticed the wheels have 10 lug nuts, is that a F450 or something?

    Shop manual

For the diesel pdf I was referring to, thedieselfiles.com has pdf for the 6.9. I haven't seen any file for the 7.3l anywhere.

    Shop manual

Bought the 1986 factory shop manual off of ebay, it came in three volumes, it looks just about as comprehensive as the get. If anyone needs to see pages out of this let me know. I know the section for the diesel is already out there in pdf, but this has chassis, electrical, etc. These are a bit...

String of bad luck. Promar engine gone

It sucks a good engine had to die like that. At least they took the responsibility. I remember once I took my truck to a shop to have some work done, when I picked it up and drove it home, it wasn't until I got home that I noticed they had left a rag on the exhaust manifold. I was so lucky that...

    Fuel system schematic

I guess whatever works right? Maybe you could try manual selector valves mounted in the cab. Like I mentioned earlier in the thread, the PO installed those for the aux tanks. I guess the only problem with that kind of setup is you can't control which tank the fuel gauge is reading from unless...

why are these trucks so rare?

Once I ran into this guy who was trying to convince me that trucks in the early to mid 80's never had diesels so it must have been swapped in at some point. I couldn't convince him that yes these trucks did have a diesel engine option. A diesel mechanic that I had work on my truck once...

    Fuel system schematic

For anyone that might find this useful, I actually found the document that I was referring to, it can be found at the following line: http://www.garagenet.biz/tanks&lines.pdf It looks like this was taken from the factory service manual and I know that it's not part of the "Diesel Engine...

Is this ebay listing the correct manual for my truck?

Found this ebay listing at the link below. I wanted to make sure it is the factory service manual for the F-Series not the Ranger since it says "Light Truck". Does anyone know...

why are these trucks so rare?

I think I have to agree that it may be a regional thing as to how common these trucks are. I think where I live in southern California, old diesel trucks are looked down upon by a lot of people unfortunately. Another thing is that around here want their expensive cars, they wouldn't want to be...

Is Viton hose really that much better?

I have heard about this replacement hose before that goes from the fuel filter to the IP. If it gets rid of the need for the olives, I would highly consider purchasing it.

Is Viton hose really that much better?

I'm not sure about that. I know that other brand have specific hose that is rated to be submerged. I have looked at the Goodyear and Gates site and they both have charts on there that list what each type of hose is rated for. After all the feedback here, I decided that there would be no...

why are these trucks so rare?

I know what you mean, I don't see too many around here in socal. I think there are people who have them, they just don't drive them much. I can't say that I drive mine that often. The interesting thing is around where I live they are rare enough that I recognize the same ones out and about...
