First significant use of the truck

Nice looking crew cab! Sounds like it did just fine... nominal perfomrance.

turbos, wastegates, and blow off valves.

Saw the effects of blocking the waste gate on a HX-35 turbo mounted on a 24V Cummins mounted on an engine dyne. The engine made about 25 psi boost and drive pressure in the 45-50 psi range with the stock adjustment (this engine was modified in other ways). With the wastegate held closed, boost...

    Painting factory rims what color?

I just found a set of four of those 7x16 wheel and want to find a fifth. I like the look so much better than the alloys I have now. The wheels on my '86 were black but I painted them the "grey" (technically called Argent) because they looked so good. Well I was going to post some comparo shots...

    Exhaust Diameter ?

Some day, when I have time, I want to install a PSD exhaust system on my truck and get rid of the 4-inch system I have. I dyno tested a 3-inch system and the 4-inch system and there was essentially no difference in power output, just noise output. My hearing is shell shocked enough from the...

    Broken head bolt

Vegas- Here's something that worked for me once. Easy outs are very hard material. Hard steel is brittle. I had some luck once years using a very shape, very hard center punch and with a mighty blow, shattered the easy out, or at least the top part of it. More work got the rest. The problem you...

    Minimum brake shoe thickness?

Strange, in nearly 30 years of own gin the truck, I've never had an issue with the rear adjuster. Always worked fine! They actually are the original brakes on the truck (lots of freeway opt rural miles, not much city). I get in there every five years or so and wash the dust out and add a little...

    Hypermax vs banks turbo kits

I replace the gaskets (I was once a dealer tech, a Ford tech, Porsche tech but mostly an England trained Land Rover tech) were replaced in '96 because of external seepage. It was a common problem and should have been fixed under warranty, as many were. Found that out a little to late to make the...

    Hypermax vs banks turbo kits

Put a larger oil cooler bundle, keystone top and second rings and improved head gaskets on that list too. I have the book issued dealers that detail the changes. You seem to be misinterpreting what I'm saying. I didn't say a word about pistons, which, incidentally hold up pretty well. I am...

    Hypermax vs banks turbo kits

Certainly with a 6.9L and while the 7.3L is measurably better, IMO it's still a weak link. Less so if you use a modern head gasket, but probably safe for 10psi. I'm guilty of the same thing you were... thinking only of one engine. ( : < ) BUT by engine problem, I meant ENGINE mechanical, not...

    Hypermax vs banks turbo kits

Umm... I don't know exactly what you are reading but what's the number one engine problem you read about, here and elsewhere? It's head related and it's exacerbated by adding more air and fuel to an engine that wasn't designed for it. Physics and engineering limits won't be denied and can't be...

    Hypermax vs banks turbo kits

The intercooler saves you in this case. You didn't say, but I assume your turbo is wastegated. What's the drive pressure? If you were to compare a non-wastegated turbo with your same setup, you would see lower drive pressure (aka backpressure) and lower EGTs. The wastegated vs non wastegated...

    Hypermax vs banks turbo kits

EGTs are higher in wastegated turbos because they are small turbos and there is exhaust restriction. Drive side pressure will be higher and that usually comes with higher EGTs. That's where intercoolers come in, of course. You betcha! 10 PSI can blow gaskets. You have to remember these...

    Hypermax vs banks turbo kits

Well, from the looks standpoint, I vote for the Banks. If this is something you will be selling, I'd install the mildest, safest, lowest boost setup. That way, the new owner gets no unhappy surprises down the road and doesn't have to burn you in effigy ( : < ) if the truck pops the head gaskets...

    Broken head bolt

That's probably true but some us are out of practice. This is the method. Even an out of practice guy can drill an 1/8 hole into a 1/2 inch bolt and then gradually go bigger. The left handed bits have saved my bacon more times than I can count. My informal estimate is that half the time you...

    Hypermax vs banks turbo kits

Well, the boost delivery method (the plumbing) is the least important aspect, it's the turbo characteristics you need to research. Are they both wastegated or not wastegated and if they are different, which do you prefer? If you don't have a preference, research the characteristics of each type...

It's good oil. I had a VOA done on some (10W30) and used some in a tractor years ago. I have a recollection of posting on BITOG. I'll let you look. I looked in my file for the VOA but didn't find it. It was likely in some files I purged about a year ago. If it was anyone but a desert dweller...

    Minimum brake shoe thickness?

For future reference for all, manual says: F250/350 Front Pad Minimum Lining Thickness: 1/32" Rear Shoe Minimum Lining Thickness: not listed but 1/8" or a little less would be reasonable

    IDI Oil Pressure Range

Not on the Bullnose trucks... they have a "real" gauge (albeit unmarked so you can't see a number). But I have had a regular gauge on my at different time so I could get an actual number.

    IDI Oil Pressure Range

Per the manual, normal hot oil pressure is 10 psi idle and 40-70 psi @ 2200 rpm. Is "normal driving" is below that... I suggest you get her good and hot then in neutral rev it to 2200 and read the pressure. That's how the manual says to do it. I suspect doing that you will see "normal" oil...

    Installing a Turbo? Read This!

Please, let's not turn this into a pissing contest about the 6.0L, huh? Put my vote on that topic into the "not interested, take it to the 6.0L board" box.

    Installing a Turbo? Read This!

Don't you mean "dry sleeves?" Wet sleeves are removable liners. You never know until you tear it down, but the head gasket is a much more likely possibility and that may be all that's wrong. If you have a cavitation hole, it will be obvious. If there's no actual leak at this point, I'm not...
