    That's called the hydroboost conversion, here's a link to a how-to on how it's done. Finding the pedal and the power steering reservoir is not easy, but if you can, hydroboost is absolutely worth it.

I would be surprised if it's still rocking its original E4OD at 300k miles, the early ones aren't exactly known for their reliability.     Turning your fuel up will raise your EGT's. If you've got black smoke, turn the fuel down untill the smoke goes away, that should help your EGT's.

    That sensor on the axle is the speed sensor for 92+ trucks. Older trucks use a speedo gear on the transmission or transfer case to drive the speedometer. You can put a '92+ axle under an older truck and just ignore the speed sensor, but I don't think you can put an older axle in a '92+ truck...
