Puffing smoke @ idle while in gear, after trip to high elevation

The timing hasn't been touched since the IP was installed 4 years ago. Calvin told me he set it around 9.5* BTDC. The air filter I think has 15k miles on it, but changing it wouldn't hurt. It's just some house brand paper filter, nothing special.

Puffing smoke @ idle while in gear, after trip to high elevation

Got it, that's what I'll do. I really gotta get around to turning down that fuel screw. It smokes bad enough here at sea level @ WOT, but up at elevation it was downright embarrassing. Every time I touched the skinny pedal it looked like an Iraqi oil field was burning...

Puffing smoke @ idle while in gear, after trip to high elevation

I told Justin when I ordered that the pump was for an NA truck, so he said he was gonna send me a 5013 pump, according to him they were the best N/A pumps in factory form. So it shouldn't be one of the fire-breathing monsters, but it does smoke like a train. And yes, I know I need a pyro, and a...

Puffing smoke @ idle while in gear, after trip to high elevation

Heya fellas. Just to get this out of the way, it's a '92 7.3L N/A, E4OD, the IP is from R&D, injectors are 7x R&D and 1x NAPA reman, IP and sticks have about 25k miles on them. And as a little more background, my truck rolls black smoke @ sea level and I don't have a pyro. Yes I'm doing it wrong...

    Replacing the TC

Here's a supposedly improved front pump seal. That's what I've been running in my truck for a few years now, so far so good.

How can I determine if steering wheel controls work?

Have you checked the cable going from the cruise servo to the IP? That's what was wrong with my cruise control, replaced the cable and it worked again.

    Slow crank

How do your battery cables look? In my experience, my truck is sensitive to bad cables. When my truck started cranking slow I replaced the positive cables and it felt like a brand new starter. A few years later it slowed down again, so I did the negative cables, and again it felt like new. After...

    Are Bilstein shocks the best?

I got my Bilsteins a few years ago, they replaced a set of Monroe Gas Magnums that I killed in under 10K miles. The Bilsteins made a noticeable improvement in ride quality, and so far I haven't killed them yet, though one or two are leaking a bit of oil. The Monroe's weren't bad for the price...

    ""Need advice desperately!!!""

It's all good brother, sorry if I was a jerk, I probably shouldn't be posting right as I get home from work LOL Just incase it may help you, if you don't already know, you can increase the size of the text on your phone by going to Settings, look for "Accessibility", and in there you should be...

    ""Need advice desperately!!!""

There's your problem. Next time do some reading before you buy parts, it's been posted 1,000,000 times across many different forums, NEVER put Autolite glow plugs in these engines. Same goes for Champion, Bosch, DieselRX, Wellman, and EVERYTHING ELSE OTHER THAN MOTORCRAFT / BERU. The only glow...

New starter for me! Powermaster 9050

I just had my Powermaster 9050 installed last week. It's incredible how fast the engine cranks now. The old starter never failed to start the truck, it'd consistently start within ~2 seconds, but now it starts with just a bump of the key. Well worth the extra money :D

    IDI Mileage

I bought my truck from the original owner with 290K miles on it, original engine and second transmission. I had the compression checked at 295K and all 8 were above 400psi. It leaks a bit of oil, but burns almost none. Now it's got just under 325K on it, still going strong. These engines live a...

So what did you do with your truck today?

I got the truck back from the shop today. Got the driver side window motor replaced, new transfer case put in, new headlights (switched from IPCW clears to ANZO clears, I'll post comparison photos when I have time), the trans cooler in the radiator is hooked up now, the AC works for the first...

    Best oil

Most IDI's love to drink Rotella 15-40, but if your engine is one of the few that doesn't drink it, there's nothing wrong with it. I run Rotella in mine and by 3K miles it's only a quart low, if that. If you were in a colder climate you'd want to run something like 5-40, but in Texas 15-40 is...

    hydroboost troubleshooting help

If it actually does come with the dual returns, please let us know! I've seen the listings before that say they have two returns, but I've heard from others that they actually come with just one. I want to get another bracket, pump, and dual return reservoir set up and ready to go incase my pump...

Can you guys tell me about my new 6.9

I can't help much regarding turbo's, but if I had to guess why it's not pulling harder than the NA, I would say your injection pump is probably worn and/or you need to adjust your timing and fueling. My NA truck with its fresh IP will put a worn out turbo truck to shame, but if the turbo truck...

    hydro-boost question

The pedals have to come from the same generation of truck as yours, you can't mix-and-match OBS pedals in to a bricknose cab. I don't know if you can play mix-and-match with auto vs manual pedals though, that may take some creativity. Either way, I'd grab both sets of pedals, and the power...

Radiator leak. 90 miles from home with camper a

The PO of my truck used that bars stop leak stuff when the radiator developed a pinhole leak. It held up for years, 'till I owned it and the tank exploded. It didn't clog up my heater core or oil cooler either. If you've just got a pinhole, it's worth a shot, but if it's a waterfall then no...

    Hydroboost compatibility

Yeah, only the F-Super's got hydroboost, but IIRC the master cylinder on the F-350's doesn't need to be drilled out to fit it on the hydrobooster, whereas the MC on the F-250's does need to be drilled out. I could be wrong though, maybe someone who's done a hydroboost swap on an F-350 can chime in.

    Hydroboost compatibility

I think on the F-350 master cylinder the mounting holes will line up, it's just the F-250 master cylinder that needs to be drilled out. Someone more knowledgeable than me can correct this if I'm wrong though :) For what it's worth, I don't think all hydroboost units are created equal. My dad's...

    odometer reading?

The OBS trucks have digital odometers, so the mileage is accurate unless someone has swapped out the gauge cluster. Fun bonus fact: OBS odometers can't go above 399k, Ford didn't put the necessary LED in place for it to display the number 4 in the hundred thousand position, so after 399,999...

    Parts suggestions

^ This right here is the truth. An IP from anywhere other than these four sources is a complete waste of money. They're not cheap, but if you're in a pinch financially, pour water on your old IP to limp it along until you can afford to do it right. You can pinch pennies on a lot of things, but...

2 cables on the injector pump?

One of the cables goes to your throttle pedal, the other goes to the cruise control module on the driver side fender.

    Return line kit

Typ4 definitely has the best kit, they come with a better type of hose than the parts store kits and the caps are much better. The store kits often have burrs inside the cap that can nick the o-rings. I have one on my truck, 4 years so far with no issues.

How do you remove the fan shroud?

Yeah, my bad, I was just trying to remember how I got mine out. I suppose that's one way to do it, pull the radiator LOL
