A couple of probably dumb questions...
If there is any preventative maintenance that can be done on the vacuum pump, I am unaware of it. With that having been said, have you taken a look into doing a hydroboost conversion? Topside oil change?
Could be worse...the fleet "mechanic" at my work once did an oil change in a Cadillac Escalade. I got into the car to do an airport pickup and got a "Check oil level" warning on the dash. I recall there being something about the internal carrier that limits the ability to use axle gears taller than a certain amount in the Dana 80's used by Ford. Note that the second 3.73 gearset listed mentions that it's thinner and meant for a 4.10 and up carrier. Again, I don't know enough...- The Warden

Regarding the 3.55 gearing... He has an F-Superduty a.k.a. an F-450, with a Dana 80 axle. Unfortunately, that limits his choices in gearing...I want to say it's possible to re:gear to 4.88's, but hopefully an F-450 expert (i.e. towcat) will have a better answer. It's actually not that simple. 6BT's and PSD's start all the time with a 17:1 compression ratio, whereas an IDI with pistons shaved to bring it from 21:1 to 17:1 will fight tooth and nail to light off. How bad is the gouge on the cam? Get in touch with Russ typ4 ...depending on how bad the gouge is, if the cam can be salvaged, he can always use cores for torque cams. For what it's worth, my '84 has factory A/C, using an FS6 compressor and the valves in the manifold. IMHO the valves are kinda pointless...they're meant to be able to seal off the system so that you can replace the compressor without losing the charge. That's a conversion. IIRC Ford never built a factory crew-cab short-bed truck between 1980 and 1996, and CERTAINLY not a flare-side. For that matter, between 1980 and 1996, Ford never offered anything bigger than a 1/2 ton truck with a 6 foot bed. There WERE some 1997 F-250HD/F-350 crew-cabs...- The Warden

That's good to know...thank you! Is the high side fitting the only difference, and is it just a matter of using the correct evaporator, condenser, and that hose? Also, I've seen a late condenser, but I haven't had a chance to compare an early and a late evaporator...how different are the two?- The Warden

Looks good overall! I prefer 270 degree sweep gauges, but that's a matter of personal preference more than anything else. What are the resistance values supposed to be for that gauge? I think I would answer that question before pulling the trigger, unless you're going to make a custom fuel...- The Warden

IIRC the a/c system's intentionally designed so that it won't cycle if the outside temperature's below freezing...I think the owner's manual makes mention of that, but I don't have a manual onhand at the moment. You can buy an FS-6 compressor (meant for a V-belt system) that's been rebuilt and prepped for R-134a. I would strongly recommend buying a condenser and an evaporator for a '96 F-350. They will bolt in place of the condenser and evaporator in your truck, but are designed to be used with...- The Warden
