    Resurrecting a $900 1986 with 7.3idi swap. Fuel?

I have a chassis wiring schematic for a 1983 to 1986 glow plug system. I see there’s a sequence of events. There’s numbered segments. There’s vague (to me) wire paths. There’s labeled components. If I open up a hood I could point out and replace a harness, an alternator, a starter solenoid...

    Resurrecting a $900 1986 with 7.3idi swap. Fuel?

Good to know, thanks! I’ve heard the injector pump is extremely sensitive to dirty fuel so I thought it was better to play it safe. Good to know a little dirt will be picked by the filter.

    Resurrecting a $900 1986 with 7.3idi swap. Fuel?

Yeah, there’s solids present in the fuel. Maybe I could pour the diesel through a cheese cloth into a gallon bucket and feed it back into the tank that way.

    Resurrecting a $900 1986 with 7.3idi swap. Fuel?

That’s what I thought. I opened up the radiator cap and didn’t see any coolant in there. Maybe the truck is low on coolant and that’s why I’m not feeling any heat nor hearing it sizzle.

    Resurrecting a $900 1986 with 7.3idi swap. Fuel?

Ugh, don’t remind me. I was just telling my wife that I’m about to pour out 4 gallons of diesel for this cleaning. I doubt this diesel is worth saving, right? All I have is 1 fuel filter.

    Resurrecting a $900 1986 with 7.3idi swap. Fuel?

In that case, I did not hear it sizzling, so I guess it doesn’t work. Maybe the contacts are gummed up. Does it heat the coolant or does it heat the oil?

    Resurrecting a $900 1986 with 7.3idi swap. Fuel?

Found a new solid state controller complete with the pedestal - that’ll be a tomorrow job to test the unit and see if it works

    Resurrecting a $900 1986 with 7.3idi swap. Fuel?

Injector lines removed and they’re soaking in diesel fuel now. Tomorrow I’ll wipe them down and run compressed air through them. While I wait for these to clean up, I’ll need to hook the glow plug system up. On a whim, I decided to plug in the engine block heater to see if it works. After a...

    “The 6.9” project thread

Pardon me dredging up an old tip but what is this trick of Chillman’s if one ever springs a small leak??? Is the trick to specifically use a lower psi radiator cap should you ever spring a leak because the lower psi cap reduces overall pressure in the coolant system?

    “The 6.9” project thread

Haha, the incompetence here being semi-related here but how about the people who do try to maintain their car but never picked up the manual or looked at a YouTube video. Next thing you know they’ve royally screwed up so bad that the mechanic is draining straight coolant out of the oil drain plug ‍

    Air Intrusion ..... Stumped!

I have one of those coffee cans on my truck that’s rusted a large hole. I admit I haven’t traced the vacuum lines to see where they go. What the heck does this vacuum canister do, anyways? I thought diesels didn’t produce vacuum (due to a lack of throttle plate)

    Leaking injector return

Yeah I’d agree with that - it’s easy to underestimate how much longer rubber hoses push the caps out the way.

    Resurrecting a $900 1986 with 7.3idi swap. Fuel?

Got the new starter solenoid installed and did an injector pump test You’re right, it wasn’t a large volume of fuel at all. Problem is, when I was bleeding the injector lines, I was seeing very rust colored diesel fuel bubbling out of the nuts. So, the injector lines have rust getting...

    Leaking injector return

I’ve started wondering about more long term replacements for these plastic caps… Surely the plastic deforms with thermal cycles, thus (potentially/likely) contributing to leaks… I guess that’s what the 2 O-rings for each injector are intended to remedy, but a 6-18months out of a set of rubber...

    Resurrecting a $900 1986 with 7.3idi swap. Fuel?

Do all of the injector pumps come with badging that read “REMANUFACTURED”? Or do the pumps that come from the “Big 4” (Russ, Wes, Justin from R&D, etc) ship IP’s with their own custom badge plate?

    Resurrecting a $900 1986 with 7.3idi swap. Fuel?

I swapped in a new starter solenoid and no luck. I’m going to bench test both of them and see about a replacement solenoid tomorrow. In the mean time I found that there’s a reman pump on the truck. I found what looks like an original stanadyne db2-4821 pump in a pile of parts. Maybe I’ll get...

1989 7.3 voltage regulator on a 1986 Harness. Will it work? What is the 4th terminal

Thanks for the response franklin2. On the voltage regulator harness, it looks like this secondary S wire should be grounded out to the firewall, is that right? How does the wiring to the alternator look?

    Resurrecting a $900 1986 with 7.3idi swap. Fuel?

Thank you. What I’ll be looking for is pressurized fuel, any fuel, leaving the injector pump. It won’t be a lot. Doing some reading from this thread it looks like even though the fuel shut off solenoid will audibly click on and off, the internal mechanism that lives under the injector pump...

    Resurrecting a $900 1986 with 7.3idi swap. Fuel?

My next step is to verify that fuel is actually coming out of the pump. I’ll take one of the upper, easiest to get at lines off of the back of the pump and see if any fuel comes out while the engine is being cranked over. I’ll do that after I figure out if I just burnt up a starter solenoid.

    getting hot

You should verify with a laser temp gun how hot it is getting. Also, make sure your radiator cap is nice and tight and that it holds the proper seal.

    Resurrecting a $900 1986 with 7.3idi swap. Fuel?

I forgot to mention that I cranked and cranked with the accelerator pedal all the way down to the floor. Probably in total 2 minutes of cranking and was not getting fuel out of the injector lines.

1989 7.3 voltage regulator on a 1986 Harness. Will it work? What is the 4th terminal

Hey all I have a 1989 F250 7.3idi voltage regulator and a 1986 harness F250 6.9idi The voltage regulator has 4 male connectors on it and the 86 harness only has 3 female connectors - do I need an 86 specific voltage regulator or will this one work?

    Resurrecting a $900 1986 with 7.3idi swap. Fuel?

Hey I installed a $33 Delphi pump from NAPA and it’s definitely drawing fuel from the gas tank much easier. The old pump is certainly bad. I’ve got fuel out of the filtered side of the fuel strainer that goes down to the injection pump. Right now I am not getting fuel to the injectors. I...

    Power windows

Funnily enough my problem is the exact opposite. Power window on the passenger side goes up just fine. The driver side needs help going up, and will sometimes fall into the door depending on window position! Haven’t really done investigating into why and how to stop it yet

How to set the timing on your 6.9 or 7.3 IDI and how to buy timing equipment.

Not sure if this is an open offer, but I’m comfortably about an hour north from Northeast Dragway if you and your timing kit are still available… once I get mine running ;)
