7.3 IDI is a turbo worth it?

Just to throw my experience into the hive.... I put a hypermax kit on my IDI van (max design boost is 11psi, but i usually only got up to 7-9) I didn't run studs. Drove it for about 25K (heavy loading, 1-2 tons in the back, long road trips, etc), when I noticed oil in the coolant. Did the...

7.3 IDI is a turbo worth it?

The turbo is completely worth it. Even just small boost (like 5psi) was noticeable for me. Now with the wicked wheel turbine and other upgrades, and I get around 12psi and more. Push it up to the teens (with studs, IP, injectors, etc) and you'll wonder why you ever drove it NA.

7.3 IDI Turbo Knock -> Engine Pull and Rebuild

In your photo, are you mixing-and-matching head bolts and head studs?

"Void" sticker on my valve cover.

Don't peel off that sticker. Not only will it void your truck's warranty, but it'll lock out your injector pump, rendering your entire engine useless.

    fuel mileage queston

That stretch between Anchorage and Fairbanks is really nice. Denali is great too. I don't like the park's rules (no drive-ins) but we hiked up to the foothills of the mountain. Got a good picture of the peak before the fog rolled in. Saw a grizzly about 50 yards away on our hike. Thankfully...

    fuel mileage queston

That is precisely the truth. 55mph is the ideal for preserving MPG with an IDI from my experience. I used to be able to drive 55-60mph all the time before I got my turbo. However, once I put the turbo on, it's just too much fun to drive like a bat out of hell, especially here in California...

    Motorcraft/Beru Glow Plugs-YOU HAVE TO ASK !!!

I've given up on places like O'Really's, AutoZoo, and PoopBoys unless I'm buying a new set of wiper blades. That's all they are basically good for. Superficial stuff. For my IDI parts, I just buy everything online (usually from R&D or other approved vendors), looking for specific brands and...

    fuel mileage queston

People always ask me that. I guess it comes down to pump time. How much WVO do you want to filter? I want to filter the minimum, so I have more free time and I can stock up for big trips. So that's why I keep eeking out as much MPG as I can. I do these big roadtrips to the arctic, and we...

    fuel mileage queston

I get 17mpg in the city, and 21mpg highway and keeping it under 60mph. I had to do A LOT of mods to get my IDI to that level of efficiency. GVOD, Turbo, Axle Swap, Installed better turbine, high efficiency TC, alum driveshaft, lowest LRR tires, e-pump, 3g alt, frame rail filter heads...

    Heater core delete or bypass?

Expensive, but I like that a lot better than before. You pay for quality. Those valves will always last, and if in the event your heater core ever starts leaking, you have a quick way to shut off the pressure to make sure it doesn't contaminate your cab. I like the coolant filter too. Clean...

6.9 van having some issues with smoke and power

If you can, I would just buy a simple WIX combo filter like this: https://www.amazon.com/WIX-Filters-33417-Heavy-Separator/dp/B000CSIODU Fill it with fuel and install it on your top-of-engine diesel filter head. Where is this "other fuel fitler/water separator?" Is it on the frame rail...

    Overfilled oil?

If I were you, I'd just pull the plug for a few moments, then thread it back on. Try to get it back on without making too big of a mess. Then save the preserved oil for the inevitable refill a few thousand miles down the road.

Fuel leak fixed. Couple other questions now 1983 6.9

There is a difference between "an advertisement" ... and buying a product, installing it, using it for tens of thousands of miles, and advocating for it. I don't own R&D IDI Performance. Ever since I installed my inlet elbow, I haven't had a IP-related leak ever. Please revise your post.

Fuel leak fixed. Couple other questions now 1983 6.9

Nice you like IDI's. If you want your truck even simpler and easier to work on, replace that leaking error-prone line with a rubber diesel-rate hose and regular brass fittings. Buy an R&D IDI Performance IP inlet elbow for the IP. No more fuel olive issues...

    7.3 vacuum pump replacement

can you post a pic? IIRC, the bracket is only held on with 3 bolts to the head, and one is obscured by the tensioning plate connected to the vac pump. If you loosen the tensioning plate, then it should afford you just enough room to get the plate rotated around to get the third bracket...

    7.3 vacuum pump replacement

Post a picture. On the v belt idi vans, I remove the vac pump and bracket together, directly from the front of the head. I don't know if the serpentine belt idis have the same luxury. This is another reason why I like the v belts over the serpentine. If you can do it without removing the...

    Headlight swap?

You could run dedicated relays. Some guys do that and it shortens the wiring needed to run the bulbs, and allows for heavier gauge wiring, thus allowing more power to increase light. I'm sure there are some write-ups on this site or FTE.

Hey guys! I need some help

Whenever I had my starter act like that, it was usually due to lack of voltage/amps from the batteries. How do your cables look? How do the terminals look? Also, what is the voltage on your batteries with the key off?

6.9 van having some issues with smoke and power

A long time ago, I bought an '84 IDI van with similar running problems. The PO didn't know what he was doing, and tried to fix everything with jerry-rigged stuff, and it led to problems. My suggestion to you is try driving this van from a diesel can. Run a 3/8" hose from the diesel can to...

Summer of upgrades, and then a problem

I just put one of those WW2's in my hypermax van turbo and it's outstanding. Extremely underrated compressor. Holy balls. that is one sweet IDI van/RV. Who did the 4wd conversion? I've considered running that Hypermax cold air setup, but like the van banks turbo kit, it takes up too much...

Did I get a good deal?

If you are talking about commercial use trucks, then yes, the DMV fees are atrocious. But I don't know about why it would be hard to register a non-commercial truck in CA? I think my van is just a $80-some yearly fee.

Did I get a good deal?

There is definitely a culture of elitism here where most people "must have" some kind of spiffy new plastic POS, cuz it makes them feel better about themselves, even though it puts them in increasing debt. Perception of wealth apparently trumps actual savings. I come from Northern Wisconsin...
