Buying a IDI Turbo. What do I look for?

How much is he asking? How old is the kit? Is it just the turbo, or the whole kit? Or is it a partial kit? Is it a turbo for a van or a truck? All these things impact the our analysis. Some worn kits might be worth it, because the price might be low enough to justify buying it anyway and...

    New-to-me IDI won't start

My initial reaction is the same as @chillman88 's. I think it's an old IP. You should be getting some smoke no matter what, unless you are not getting fuel to your injectors, which is likely. But before that, exhaust all other options: First, are you getting fuel to your IP? To check that...

Cross country roadtrip - Oregon to Pennsylvania

If you are cruising on I-70 to Denver, you are likely above 5000 ft. I've tuned my IDI for sea level, and I'll assume since you are from Oregon, you probably tuned it under 2000 ft as well. Whenever I get up above 6000ft elevation, there is a bit of smoke, and on I-70, it can get up to 9000 ft...

Cross country roadtrip - Oregon to Pennsylvania

Right on. I once drove my IDI from Los Angeles to Newfoundland, and we found out we had a cracked block near Lans Aux Meadows. Even though most other engines would be an immediate death sentence, we made some adjustments, and we were able to limp my IDI back to Los Angeles.

    Seats for Diego

If all you care about is getting seats ASAP, just go to your nearest pick-u-part junkyard and find late-80's early-90's Ford trucks, find decent seats, and then buy them. If used seats don't work for you, then you will need to use the Search feature.

Cross country roadtrip - Oregon to Pennsylvania

Small world. My friend and I drove that same route in Wyoming in 2012 too during the wild fires. You and I might have passed each other. I remember north of Cheyenne, the smoke was so thick, we thought it was fog.

    Universal trans cooler?

I've bypassed my radiator tranny cooler as well, but I invested in a C6 deep sump with cooling fins on it, and also, I run the largest auxiliary cooler that the E-series had. It came off a U-haul.

If you are taking I-80, definitely stop at the Red Iguana in SLC for lunch or dinner if you can. Best Mexican mole sauce on the planet.

    Alternative diesel fuel

Yeah. I've been pretty explicit about the fact I'm taking about biofuel, in a section labeled "alternative diesel fuel. "

    Alternative diesel fuel

130k on my Jetta and 110k on my IDI since 2007 and 2012, respectively. Not only am I confident in my filtration and my custom secondary biofuel circuit (which btw is not cheap, and an extrapolation of the superior Frybrid design), I drive these vehicles to the remotest parts of North America...

    Alternative diesel fuel

If you are running a stock fuel system, then yeah, a fuge is the way to go. I'm not that concerned about the photos in that link... different room temperatures affect the proportion of congealed liquids, so while it looks scary initially, it's not a major concern. Fuging that same liquid on a...

    Instrument cluster

If all your gauges are either completely dysfunctional or if they collectively fail at the same time, then you have an under-dash ground problem. Your cluster is likely ok as is. But if you have some gauges working and other failing sporadically, then you have sender issues. The tank guages...

    Alternative diesel fuel

I used a gravity feed system with three filters mounted between a high-mounted "fill" barrel and a low-mounted "storage" barrel. The three filters progressively filter down to 1 micron. I pour my alternative fuel into the "fill" barrel, and over time, gravity pushes the fluid thru the 3...

    motor mount bracket bolts?

Motor mount bracket bolts are 1/2" - 13 x 3/4" or 1 1/4" length as per these engine specs: http://www.nickpisca.com/diesel/engine/7-3-idi-torque-specs-and-bolt-dimensions-with-images/ The torque for the block motor mount bracket bolts is 70 ft-lbs. I use anti-seize on my motor mount bolts...

What's your favorite method for degreasing an IDI?

When I recently rebuilt my engine, I used a scraper to clean off the thick gunk, then used a combination of mineral spirits, brake cleaner, and acetone to strip it down with paper towels. With the big gunk removed with the scraper, it didn't take much wiping to clean off the head and block...

    7.3 idi air in lines

Trace back your lines back to the tank. Look for seepage or leaks. That is your best bet. If the lines and selector valve look dry, then you might need to get a mirror and check the bibs on the tank fuel pickup. If those have seepage, then you might have a tiny pinhole leak on the metal...

You can find replacement springs at autoparts stores. Just bring your old one in and find one (preferably a "double" spring for added peace of mind) and compare the size. My local store has a half dozen different size springs.

    Bent Beam 2wd Lift?

I had a shop that wanted to bend the beams on my 1988 E250 to get the camber right, but I declined. I thought that was only necessary for vehicles with kingpins. I ended up solving my camber issue by buying stronger progressive coils for the front, that were rated for the RV application...

    Alternative diesel fuel

I've been running wvo on custom designed heated systems for years in my Jetta TDI and my IDI. Filtration is crucial, and so is dewatering. But so is assembling a biofuel kit that will bring the temp of the veg so its viscosity is near identical the diesel. And the kit needs to be made of...

First impression towing with 6.9 NA

The OP's performance with a non turbo is pretty standard for mph. Before I turboed my van, pulling up a hill was 50mph max. It didn't matter if it was half throttle or full throttle... you only got 50mph out of it. Now with my turbo and gearvender, I can easily pull up the California passes...

    Shag Wagon Revival

Sometimes the return-to-idle issue is the cold idle solenoid. All my coolant sensor switches have failed, and whenever I have them plugged in, the CI solenoid engages no matter what temp it is and revs up my engine. I've just unplugged it, because in Los Angeles, I never really need the...
