Joe I'm afraid you and I have the same problem. I've been trying to figure it out for years. And it is only getting worse.
I don't see how it can be anything in the front dif, or the axle shafts, if the front is manual, and unlocked, and the transfer case is out of gear.
But I have replaced...
Exactly!
Here's the thing on top of that...
My starter when installed, only had about an inch to an inch and a quarter or so, of room between it and the engine, right there. The way you are holding the extension, is at a further angle than I had room for. So even with the wobbly extension, I...
Thank you. I was wishing that I had taken a couple pics of that.
Both from that direction, and top down, so that people could see how close the body is to the flange right there.
Wasn't going to pull the starter again, so I could take the pics, though. LOL
I seriously had to put that bolt in...
I should say... If you have the old, original style starter like I did, don't waste your time trying to get to that top bolt, to remove the starter... Without taking off the wiring first. I could have saved a good 15 to 20 minutes if I had just gone straight to removing the wiring first. LOL...
That knock noise is getting worse. And doesn't go away at warmup any more. The unbalanced running is also getting worse and doesn't go away after warmup.
Thank you VERY much for the advice about the injectors. That makes a lot of sense. Cracking the injectors will certainly show the bad one or...
Here is a pic of the starters side by side, for a comparison:
Here is a video of what it was like before replacing the starter:
And here it is after I installed the starter:
I actually tried that. I couldn't get my hand or fingers up into that area to do that.
This is the kind of wobble extension I am talking about. Mine is a longer extension, but the same thing.
Even my shortest universal joint type extension would not fit in the area between the flange and the...
Ok, I can kind of see that conclusion.
Howsomever...
If I had had a stud in there, I STILL would have had a lot of trouble, trying to get a nut up into that area, and started onto the stud.
You can't see it, whatever. And at least with this particular starter, the body of the starter bulges...
Changed my starter.
Those newfangled gear reduction starters sure make a difference.
Next job, when I have the time for it, is to figure out which cylinder is slacking off and not doing it's job. (I'm betting it's the rear most on the passenger side.)
I've noticed for a while now, that the...
Got er done!
New starter turns it over much faster. First start, cold start. Batteries were not fully charged. Ran the GPs for the normal cycle. BAM! Started right up. Less than a quarter of the time it normally takes. (Even BEFORE the old starter began to go bad.)
Could NOT get that top bolt...
Once I get the bolts out of there, I will see if I have another one of the same size and more threads, that I can make a stud from.
Or better yet, a piece of allthread the same size.
If I don't have anything suitable here, for making the stud, then it isn't going to happen. I won't be able to...
Ok, the starter just arrived.
Sucker is much bigger and heavier than I expected. (It's also black. The ad and even the shipping label said "natural", and showed it shiney. Not complaining, just making a note of it. LOL)
I kind of expected it to be smaller.
Anyway, can someone tell me the...
This one specifically says diesels EXCEPT powerstroke....

Thank you to all.
I guess I am leaning toward it being the starter.
That grinding noise during the times when it is really slow to turn over just had/has me worried that there is a problem in the engine, instead. After startup, if you stand on the passenger side, it is pretty obvious that...
My truck has been getting harder and harder to start.
This morning, worst of all. When I first turned the key, it almost didn't turn over at all. Finally turned over. Really sounded like some grinding going on in the engine.
The second turn over was slightly better. Several turnovers were like...
