7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

After a good start, things went sideways. I have a crack in the valve seat and between two valves in one chamber on one head. This head is junk right? FYI - the first pic is magnaflux; second and third are dye penetrant.

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Well, I started off the day with good news -- the heads I pulled off the '88 NA motor were nice and straight (couldn't get a .002" feeler gauge under the straightedge) and pre-cups were nice, too -- only minor cracks; nothing extending outside the combustion chamber.

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

No, I gave it away a week ago. Had a busted extension housing.

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Ok, so the back story - I bought an '87 crew cab 4x2 ZF-5 DRW dually a year or so ago. The 6.9 was seized; had water sitting in the cylinders and would have needed sleeves. Bought a 7.3 IDI-T non-running for $1000. Disassembled it to find the block was .040. Junked the block and kept...

    Engine teardown adventure

Holler if you need spare parts. I'm combining two 7.3's to make one 7.3 IDI turbo and I'll have some leftovers.

So what did you do with your truck today?

Checked a pair of IDI heads for cracks. All good except for pre-cups. Should check another pair tomorrow; hope to end up with one good set.

Magnafluxing Heads - Where to Check?

All the pre-cups are cracked, a few past the fire ring. I have another set of heads from a low-mileage NA 7.3 that I need to remove and check as well. Hope these have nice pre-cups and no cracks. Thanks

Magnafluxing Heads - Where to Check?

Fellas - I'm magnafluxing a pair of heads that I pulled off a 94 7.3 IDI-T. The pre-cups are cracked, of course, but what about the rest of the head? Are there any areas that I need to focus on besides just checking the surface of the chambers? Thanks, Scott

    Engine Paint?

Fellas - I'm rebuilding my 7.3 IDI-T and I'm looking for engine paint that's close to factory gray. Any recommendations? I'm looking for spray bomb stuff; I don't have my paint guns here. thanks! Scott

    4x4 Conversion

I'm in the middle of converting my 87 crew cab DRW 6.9 ZF5 truck to 4x4. I went with a Dana 60 on leaf springs. Didn't use Super Duty diffs because I didn't want to change the rear and I didn't want mix-matched wheel bolt patterns. Everything is documented on my channel -

If this motor doesn't work out.

Yep, Promar has a good reputation. BTW - I thought Jasper was always junk.

    7.3 IDI Block

All 7.3 IDIs get sleeved? Interesting, to say the least. FYI - the IDI-T block is the same as the NA block. If you're referring to the short block that makes sense, since the rotating assembly is different.

    Centurion Bronco build

After 5 years, it's probably time for someone else to take over. Having said that, I've had 6 or so project cars for 5+ years. Just need to retire from the Army next year so I can spend more time on them.

Looking for Cracked (Yes, Cracked!) Tail Housing/Extension Housing for 4x4 ZF5 Trans!

If the eyelets are ripped out, that's a bit more of a repair than I want to tackle. Hoping to find something with hairline cracks. Thanks

Looking for Cracked (Yes, Cracked!) Tail Housing/Extension Housing for 4x4 ZF5 Trans!

Fellas - I'm rebuilding a 4WD ZF5 S47 for my 1987 crew cab diesel dually project and I need a ZF5 4x4 tail housing/extension housing. I'm probably not going to buy an un-cracked extension housing because these are bringing $600+ and I can buy a complete ZF5 4x4 trans for $800 or so and just...

    Grinding?

Grinding noise isn't good. What year and is it stock, rebuilt, etc? Are you sure it's internal or could it be one of your pulleys, alternator, water pump, etc? Have you cut apart an oil filter to look for any metal?

    driveshaft shenanigans

That's good to hear. I'm planning on 35's for my truck and it has 4.10's.

So what did you do with your truck today?

Trip got cancelled at the last minute, but I don't see many old cars where I am; we're on base and at the other side of the island from Havana. Just a 60's 4 door Shivverlay sitting on jackstands under a carport and a 70's 2 door Volare or Aspen or something like that.

So what did you do with your truck today?

It's getting there. Main shaft is bare, waiting to be re-loaded with gears, synchos, bearings, and sliders. I have to head to Cuba next weekend for work, but should have it back together the following weekend. thanks

So what did you do with your truck today?

ZFS5-47 4x4 trans - got it all apart and wanted to reassemble today but realized my rebuild kit didn't come with bearings for the main shaft.

Building a TIDI from a couple motors plus new parts

I'm doing something similar to my '87 CC dually that I'm converting to 4x4. Came with a 6.9 that was seized, so I sourced a IDIT that had been rebuilt. Unfortunately, it was .040, so I junked the block and kept everything else. I then bought an '88 F350 4x4 plow truck that was falling apart...
