    Truck Registration

Maine has an excise tax based on the purchase price - it starts out about 2.7% and drops each year for six years and then remains at the six year level until the end of time - which for me is $134 a year. I caught a break when I first registered it - the town clerk didn't add the value of the...

    Fuel Additives

I've used Stanadyne Performance for years - original injectors and injector pump lasted 24 years - and probably would still be operating if I wouldn't have been running down a starting problem which was later cured with a new starter. Stanadyne also emulsifies water so there's never any water to...

    No headlights?

There's some wiring involved with plow trucks - the headlights switch from the truck to the plow's head gear and back (when the plow is off the truck) Some times that can act up. Sounds like the dimmer switch is the culprit this time.

Have you or any past owners had a plow on the truck?

Rotor and pad suggestions to improve braking

"For op when was the front last done? Rear?" The front had rebuilt calipers 15 years ago - and possibly rotors but I can't recall. It's been a long time. "Have you had drums turned?new wheel cylinders? New full hardware?" The rear has had new shoes, cylinders, and drums 6 years ago - all that...

The truck is a 4WD, just put a new master cylinder on it last summer.

Rotor and pad suggestions to improve braking

My '93 F-250 has always had poor braking since new. The rear drums probably do 10% of the work, the front disks could be better. The current disks are gouged. On another vehicle I tried slotted and drilled rotors and was very happy. The quality matters too - some Chinese rotors rust overnight...

    Clearance for tire chains

I have only run chains on the rear of my '93 F-250 - but a plow truck at work on icy days I ran chains on all four corners - 2007 F-350 - kept tight on the tire there was no interference. I can't imagine chains would damage the drive mechanically.

    E fuel pump question

Why would anyone delete the stock lift pump? I replaced the pump once in the 27 years I've owned the truck. It provides reliable and consistent service without the complication of adding 12 volts to the mix.

    Towing ?

I've towed a 3 ton travel trailer across the US 3 times and across the Sierra Madre (Maine to Mazatlan, Mexico) eight times. It will do 80mph unless there's a headwind or a grade. I often did tow well over the speed limit - even as the speed limit increased from the national 55mph to 75mph (in...

    7.3 Cold Starting

After exhausting every other possibility I tried a DB starter - the original starter turned the engine over but not fast enough to start the truck quickly. I've had the DB for two years now - it's inexpensive, so who knows how long it will last but for now my hard starting problems are a memory.

    Batteries

A starter needs to turn fast to start a diesel. Gasoline engines are more forgiving with a slower starter.

    What oil do you use?

I have only used Rotella since the early 1980's. I have never had any internal engine failures nor have I noticed consumption to be a problem. I used Rotella in my motorcycles too - starting with conventional T4 and then moving up to T6.

88 f250 saved from savage nature

Two hours prior to starting is usually enough time for the block heater to warm the engine enough for starting. The factory block heater Google says is 1,000 watts. Here in Maine at .15 per KWH that's 30 cents for 2 hours or $1.20 for 8 hours. What is worse is the heater boils coolant it...

Cetane Booster beneficial in a 7.3 idi?

In Maine we had premium diesel briefly - it was dyed red before heating oil and dyed diesel were dyed to assist tax collection. I'm not sure what the cetane number was but I noticed increased performance at the first tankful. Towing a 3 ton travel trailer top speed was bettered by 5 mph and...

    Odd E4OD issue towing

It might be as simple as the speed sensor in the differential having filings on it. Try removing the sensor, cleaning off the surface and reinstalling it. Happens to mine now and then.

    Trailer towing q's

One of the biggest favors a person can do with an automatic transmission is to put the transfer case in 4 Low (hubs unlocked) when backing into a campsite. Reverse seems to be geared higher than drive starting from a stop - plus there's no air passing through the coolers to cool the ATF.

    Trailer towing q's

I've been out west (Yellowstone, Utah, Arizona) 3 times and way into Mexico 6 times - crossing the Sierra Madre west of Durango towing a 7,000 lb travel trailer. Steep hills slowed it down but those grades also slowed OTR trucks down too. I would try to keep the speed up 75-80mph most of the...

    93 ford f250 na 7.3 electric issues

The headlight switch or the connector for the switch is burnt. I think running a trailer with all those clearance lights cooked mine a few years ago. There's a lot of additional draw when a trailer is connected. I've replaced most of the trailer clearance lights with LED lights - much less draw.

    Black smoke under moderate acceleration

I'll do that. The problem is that this work was done almost 2 years ago. The truck has seen little use since then - I will check with the shop.

    Black smoke under moderate acceleration

At 270K miles I had the injectors and injection pump replaced by a local shop. The truck used to smoke only at higher elevations - around 8,000' and higher. Now the truck smokes at speeds over 40 when I accelerate. I towed a 3 ton travel trailer a few days ago and it smoked more - a grade made...
