How bad is the HG job on a 7.3 IDI?

I picked up a Haynes manual at the local part store (flagship Oreilly in my area). It isn’t perfect but can help fill in procedural and knowledge gaps when needed. For like $25 it’s been helpful but ymmv. This one doesn’t include diesel engine specific info but was helpful when doing a water...

    Portable Inflator suggestions

I’ve been considering getting a Milwaukee battery powered inflator but haven’t been sold yet. Mostly use m12 but have m18 as well. Heavily considered a m18 inflator over the summer but passed. Now I see there’s an m12 inflator at Home Depot for ~$135 For a passenger car (35psi) I can get away...

How bad is the HG job on a 7.3 IDI?

It’s reverse thread so clockwise (driver side) to loosen and anti-clockwise (passenger side) to tighten.

    6.9 IDI questions

I second the RA closeout section. run cheap Oreilly or Walmart oil on the idi and keep OCI to 3k miles. Usually prefer the power stroke oil filter but have run the smaller idi filter a bit lately because it’s been on RA closeout.

High output Alternator options for 6.9 idi

I’m no expert but don’t the different battery chemistries between lithium and lead acid necessitate different charging voltages and protocols? it makes sense to beef up the alternator for vehicle battery but if you install lithium for house usage should it be a separate charging circuit?

    MOUNTAIN ROAD TRIP Preparation!

Least on the 7.3 there’s a smaller diameter, maybe 1/2” coolant hose above the starter connecting to the top of the block. Have had leaks from this hose before so maybe worth checking unless youre positive it’s a head gasket leak

    Drum brake hold-down spring orientation

@Black dawg replaced the spring with a red one today. The cablw adjuster routes behind the spring and rear plate I think. Regardless the spring that popped off today was not the adjuster side. I like the idea to modify the hook to disallow ejection, wrapped some wire around things which seems...

So what did you do with your truck today?

I agree, the backing plate doesn’t seem in horrible shape. The inside has a slight collar/ridge on the brake shoe side but it’s not excessively wallowed out. I replaced the parts and wound some galvi wire around things to see if anything changes. Just the forward spring was missing now the rear...

So what did you do with your truck today?

New tstat and water pump install went well on the idi. No more squealing at higher rpms now with better belt tension. Old tstat was functioning fine but with a new motorcraft unit the operating temp has dropped from around 203* to just above 190*. Learned a lot. Tdi needs a tstat too which...

    Coolant filter kit

Right on, saw the cdd kit and wasn’t sure since it’s labeled as 92-94 years but makes sense it’s just the serp belt difference. Have seen some pics with flat bar used to mount off the fuel filter bracket While I agree the coolant filters aren’t 100% mandatory despite many flushes there’s still...

    Coolant filter kit

This has been discussed and I’ve seen a Napa coolant filter kit mentioned p/n 4109 to contain filter base, filter, hose, and hardware. From the looks of it this now just contains the filter base? Moose sells a kit for $300<. Anyone have recommendations for kits that are cheap-er-ish? Need to...

7.3 IDI Block Deck Flatness / Trueness Spec

Great to see the care and effort with this. Watched a YT video today titled “changing Subaru head gasket in autozone parking lot” and he did what he set out to do… also part of the work was honing down the heads in the Home Depot parking lot on a big slab of tile/marble counter top. It makes...

FIXED (I think): Solenoid feed wires hot, and voltage drop

Dang wonder if gauge is just typical ford dash gauge or if there’s some really hot wiring somewhere. My after market gauge shows about 10.5v while manually cycling GPs, the factory dash gauge is non-op. Thought that was even a bit low

FIXED (I think): Solenoid feed wires hot, and voltage drop

I have a manual GP setup and it makes a squeal when pressed.. it operates fine and was done by previous previous owners… have always wondered if it was standard but never had much reason to ask

7.3 IDI Block Deck Flatness / Trueness Spec

I have no experience with this but think there’s a recent thread about similar work from @bulletpruf It doesn’t have shop manual specs copied like your post but there are some tolerances mentioned so maybe it’s worth a oook and hopefully more experienced folks can chime in...
