85 6.9 IDI Will not run

How do you have your return off the regulator plumbed? If its teed into the return line to the tank, that extra pressure in the return line can make trucks run poorly as well. the return system needs to be at a very low pressure like 2 psi or something.

    Dead 7.3 IDI Diagnosis

You can try and check the resistance in the main battery cables. I dont know what the max resistance that is allowed, but I would want as close to 0 as possible. If you have been cranking it a lot, its possible to burn up a brand new starter pretty quickly. If it were me I would trow the...

85 6.9 IDI Will not run

Two things first the facet pump is definitely not recommended anymore. Their quality has fallen off a lot and they really don't flow enough for our trucks. Second I am not an IP expert but it sounds to me like something is messed up internally. 60+ psi is a big difference from 11 psi. I would...

    Tach cutting in and out

That said we all know parts these days are not great and many are bad out of the box. He should probably at least double check to make sure his new sensor is good, if he hasnt already.

    Tach cutting in and out

I know a lot of guys like the after market transmission controllers for the e4od. Not sure if you can get one that will work with the IDI, but they seem to work a lot better and give you more control over the trans. If it is the TCM it might be worth looking into.

    Passing of a member

oh man this is so sad. I didnt know him, but I always enjoyed his posts and love seeing his truck. He had done such a good job on it. Praying for his family.

6.9 IDI valve train questions + head gasket job

This method makes sense to me, but that really doesn't mean much. I have never done this, or looked into how its supposed to be done. But it seems to me you have a good repeatable test that gives you results across all the holes that can be compared with out too many variables. Besides that, in...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Did it blow the seals? Or did you get a hole in it?

Borg Warner 1356 manual shift transfer case

on the electric ones I know you can. There was a guy on the Bronco forums that sold a manual switch that you could install right there and engage the 4 wheel drive if your electronics failed. It was called the shiftster. Not sure on the manuel transfercases if the internals are any different...

    Injection pump cores.

I would assume any of the pump builders would want them. I would call and ask. or make an add here and see if a couple members would want one.

How bad is the HG job on a 7.3 IDI?

good trick is to get some longer bolts that fit the holes for the transmission mounting bolts. cut the heads off and thread them into the upper holes. That way they are more like a stud and you can slide the transmission over them. It helps keep it all aligned properly and takes a bunch of...

Hard start, new DB2 & new fuel lines on back end of lift pump.

I second what IDIBronco asked, where did you get your IP from? if its not from a good source it can cause all sorts of problems. Second, did you time the truck? if you just stuck the IP on there it could be very out of time and give you fits trying to get it to run right.

California trip anyone along the way in case?

Seriously try to buy as little fuel here in California as you can. It was bad already and its climbing super fast. Just saw $6.29 tonight. I am out on the coast so you are not going to be anywhere near me. Are you saying you are picking up both of those trucks? are you making two trips?

No Oil Pressure on 7.3 Idi

This was my thought too. If he drove it that far with no oil pressure that engine should be screaming. Lifters should be bad, bearing should be welded to the crank, all sorts of bad things. All that said I have heard of these engines, and the 300 straight 6 going for a long time with very low...

    Portable Inflator suggestions

I have heard nothing but good things about the M18 inflator. m12 seems like it would be a little underpowered and take quite a few batteries to top up multiple tires, maybe not, but just seems that way. I don't think any of these would be great for filling up multiple tires from empty. You...

    6.9 IDI questions

Mine always runs better on fresh oil, and I always change it between 3-4000 miles so it is never that old. These engines just put a lot of soot into the oil. Turns black pretty much instantly.

    6.9 IDI questions

A word of warning, many have found that for whatever reason the IDI likes to burn Rotella more than other brands. No idea why, it just seems to. So keep an eye on your oil level and if it seems to be using more than it should, try switching brands. I have had better luck with the Delo 400...

    95 F350 Frame Swap to 96 F-Superduty.

FedEx is by far the worst shipping service where we are at. Everything arrive looking like Ace Ventura delivered it. Not sure why they are so much rougher on the packages than the others.

    6.9 IDI questions

@Clb is right. There are a few possiblities of what is could be. What is the fuel level in the tank? 1/4 or below the shower heads could have broken off and you are sucking air. It could be pieces of the old shower heads or algae are stuck in the pick up tube and blocking flow. fuel filters...

Pulling my hair out with 6.9 fuel problem

I had my shower head disintegrate and block the pickup. It wasn't quite as bad as you are describing but it was close. It got worse and worse until finally the truck wouldnt idle. When dropped the tank and looked at the pickup it looked solid and you could barely pass air through it. and that...

1989 7.3 idi puffing white smoke out of exhaust and backfiring

I agree with Nero and IDIBronco. I would do a compression test first, then an IP from a good rebuilder, and 8 injectors from a good rebuilder, NOT ebay.

So what did you do with your truck today?

sounds like a disc brake conversion is in your future. ;) or maybe there is something wrong with the holes the springs go in and you just need a new backing plate. not sure if those can be replaced easily or not.

    89 7.3 IDI sluggish

What did you do to fix the shower head issue? drop the tank and clean out the tank and replaced the shower head with a new one? Yeah. You have to drop the tank and remove all the pieces. you will also have to clear the pieces that have been sucked up. Either a new pick up or blowing low...
