3.55 gears vs 4.10s with gear vendors

Yeah it sounds like 4.10 would be better if mountains are at all in your normal routine. I guess I find the cost of a new GV setup to be so off-putting that any reasonable alternative sounds better even though I often thought about how nice it would be to drop my RPMs on the highway yet still...

3.55 gears vs 4.10s with gear vendors

I have an N/A 7.3 with 4.10s and love it but yeah 75 is about it on the highway. My turbo 7.3 with 3.55 is much nicer on the highway. I would add turbo and swap to 3.55 before a GV. Of course if you're towing heavy in the hills you might want those 4.10s and just learn to like 70-75. Besides...

    Need a IP Adjustment Tool

I found my line clamp gave a better reading without the ground attached to anything. Sand the line clean, wipe it off and attach the little clamp. I think the instructions with the Tach n Time also suggest spraying some WD-40 on the line if a steady reading is difficult to obtain.

Dana 50 wheel bearing replacement, how in-depth should I get

Well maybe mine does have the gold flakes. I guess I just never noticed--plus my vision isn't perfect and I avoid wearing my contacts when I know I'll get good and greasy.

Beware of crappy magnetic oil drain plugs

I am sure people on Facebook say lots of things. . . . .

Dana 50 wheel bearing replacement, how in-depth should I get

Well no gold flakes in the Paragon 3000 that I use, and 1 tube sure lasts a long time. $20 a tube for Paragon 3000 or $18 for TRC 880 Crown & Chassis at Lock 'n' Lube. Personally I avoid Lucas due to their snake-oil type products like their "Oil Stabilizer", but I hear their regular grease and...

Dana 50 wheel bearing replacement, how in-depth should I get

Yeah I too went deep into reading about NLGI #2 grease and their various characteristics, Timken load tests, washout, etc. I was sold on Texas Refinery Products for whatever reason, probably because i'm drawn to whatever is a bit less common or an underdog in the fight.

    What is this?

I am curious where you are running the wires through the firewall? On my '92 I ran 10 gauge from the battery to a fuse block but I ran out of patience looking for an existing point to thread the wires through and just made a new hole. As an aside, having a properly grounded fuse block under...

Dana 50 wheel bearing replacement, how in-depth should I get

It's hard to get too much grease in there. I recently replaced all the wheel bearings and races on my D60 and I gooped a lot of grease on the spindles, bearings, and inside of the hubs. But you didn't ask the conversation starter of "What kind of grease?" I'm sure everyone has their personal...

Rebuild or replace motor? New project - 1985 F-250 4x4 6.9 with Banks, T19, and GVOD.

Well if I had the time, tools, and space I would definitely go for a rebuild just for the learning experience. There seems to be a constant supply of core engines to work with and some are quite a deal. In my area there are still cheap 7.3 F-Superduty trucks for sale.

    IP timing on turbo engine?

Yeah it does clear up. I'm not sure if the pump was turned up. The IP was installed about 50k ago at a Ford dealership and there appears to still be some red ink on the screws to access the fuel screw.

    IP timing on turbo engine?

I think the only adjustment smaller than the IP is the TPS. Basically my truck is a bit smokey at times and that's not the look I'm going for. Would slightly advanced timing equate to a bit more black/dark grey smoke, especially on acceleration?

    IP timing on turbo engine?

Well once again too much forum reading has me confoosed. I checked my timing today and it's sitting right about 10.5 10.6 degrees at 2k RPM. Doing some forum reading led me to a post here where someone was basically advocating for a slightly retarded timing while on another site I find info...

    Wrong again

Of course if you live where there are lots of trees the GPS isn't worth much as a speedometer in my experience.

    E40d noise

If you have a transfer case there is a known issue with vibrations manifesting as a very noticeable rattle. Mine rattles once I hit about 2300-2500rpm.

    Help! Vehicle Dies.

Of course I could be wrong here but have you checked the vents on the fuel tanks? I knew someone who was trying to figure out why their chipper would run great for a while and then shutoff and not restart. A simple cleaning of the tank vent fixed it right up. If you do go for a new IP and...

Good replacement for Holley Black Pump?

Unless the failed pump added too much resistance you ought to be able to limp home with just the injection pump. I had my pump relay fail and didn't realize I was running on just the IP until I tried to push hard up a hill, but 55mph on relatively flat terrain was doable.

10.25 Sterling, How Bad is too Bad

Yeah RuffStuff makes some nice parts. I know they mention something about some 10.25 axles needing a spacer while others don't but it sounds like yours was straightforward.

ZD1A and ZD28 Glow Plugs from RA

Yeah RockAuto has some wonky shipping. If you can get parts that all ship from one warehouse then it often seems like a better deal but if multiple warehouses are involved then RA can go pound sand. I find Summit or JEGS to be better overall in terms of prices, wait time, and consistent free...

    Transfer Case Lube (1988)

I have spent some time on this specific fluid issue. Ford currently specs Mercon LV. Ford hasn't licensed Mercon since about 2006 so any ATF that lists Mercon compatible is just an empty statement from the brand and no relation to Ford. Mercon LV specs...

Is it a problem to have the positive and negative cables run side by side with no air gap?

I have found heater hose to be reasonably cheap and very effective as chafing gear. Never used it as a full sleeve but sliced lengthwise and then held in place with zip ties it has been quite useful. DelCity offers a variety of different types of loom material...

    She just... died....

Maybe time to add a fuel pressure gauge to the IP inlet line and see if there is a pressure difference between front and rear tank, or if there is pressure at all. The IP will suck enough fuel to keep going but won't sustain high RPMs very long, at least in my experience.

    Another terrible loss..

Too may good people gone too soon. Losing Russ and Calvin is like losing the IDI library of Alexandria, and not to mention also a couple of nice guys. What ever will be, will be.
