Well once again too much forum reading has me confoosed. I checked my timing today and it's sitting right about 10.5 10.6 degrees at 2k RPM. Doing some forum reading led me to a post here where someone was basically advocating for a slightly retarded timing while on another site I find info suggesting advancing the timing on a turbo engine. So, which one is it? Or just set it at 8.5 and go have a beer? And I don't mean an IDI-T engine I just mean a 7.3 with a turbo on it.

My truck seems to like 6-7*, but there are many factors. For instance, my injectors are set at a slightly higher pop pressure. That would in theory retard timing, but each pump is unique and due to the nature of the dynamic timing systems on our IPs, each pump really ought to be set differently. I would recommend some trial and error, do bigger adjustments and then dial it in with smaller adjustments.

I think the only adjustment smaller than the IP is the TPS. Basically my truck is a bit smokey at times and that's not the look I'm going for. Would slightly advanced timing equate to a bit more black/dark grey smoke, especially on acceleration?

That’s likely too high of a setting on the fuel screw

Does it clear up with boost?

Yeah it does clear up. I'm not sure if the pump was turned up. The IP was installed about 50k ago at a Ford dealership and there appears to still be some red ink on the screws to access the fuel screw.

I run mine at 6.5 BTDC, 90 cc CDD pump, CDD "stock" Turbo kit, Oregon Cam Grinder's cam. It seems to be very happy. No smoke unless you lug it. My timing is set at idle as my timing light looses fidelity above 1500 rpm.

I plan on hooking my high speed data logger up to it one of these days, along with a quad encoder mounted to the crank and a piezo pressure transducer, just to see exactly what happens and when. Should be able to get resolution down to less than a tenth of a degree of crank position and see the entire pressure build up and release within the injectors.

I did this exercise on some 2 stroke snowmobile engines years ago in order to understand exactly how the read valve petals were moving relative to the crank position and events. When you collect data points a few thousand times a second, interesting things start to be seen.

What eng?

For a stock 7.3 literally none of your post will help a "stock" eng.
But interesting how you are doing it.
How do you correct the internal advance curve @idle?
Russ' cam?
Have you hit it with a regular meter for grins?

I'm in the same boat as well. My timing is right on 8.5 BTDC at 2K. It's a 7.3NA motor with (093) turbo added turned up one flat. Has 3" down pipe into 4" straight pipe. I don't see smoke during the day but if anyone is behind me with LED headlights I can see a nice fog. Also smokes when lugged. This is after it's been driven for hours and fully warm. I was thinking of retarding the timing slightly to see if it helps any.

Mine does the same thing, set at the same timing, but with a 90cc pump, same down pipe/exhaust setup as yours.

I just havent gotten around to checking my timing after putting some miles on yet.
