So what did you do with your truck today?

I admired the 2" of snow sitting on it, then went to the shop where I made the missing plate that holds the CDR grommet to the (turbo) valve cover. My toes are unpleasantly thawing out!

1986 6.9 IDI with no glow plug light and no start.

great minds think alike... I mentioned the FSS power & click in post #8 ;Poke Although leaving the key on for 2 hrs shouldn't hurt that circuit since it's always on while driving :dunno I'm betting on a fried GP controller with some bad glow plugs - but I'd have expected to see a bit of smoke...

    Clutch adjustment help please!

My truck did this and it turned out to be a failed pressure plate... there only needs to be about 1/2" of movement at the end of the fork. I thought it should be more too, and replaced the hydraulics with a prefilled master/hose/slave. Didn't help.

1986 6.9 IDI with no glow plug light and no start.

True, but it's very easy to burn out glow plugs with a manual switch. I like the controller on my 7.3 - works fine and also alerts you if a GP burns out by short-cycling. If you do replace yours I suggest converting to this later style controller. And always use Motorcraft/Beru glow plugs only...

So what did you do with your truck today?

My other half has been asking for an "Oh Shit" grab handle up there too. Lots of other things to do first, but it's on the list :)

1986 6.9 IDI with no glow plug light and no start.

Correct... but that sounds like current being drawn by the plugs. May need to have someone else crank while you put power to the plugs... Are any cylinders firing at all, or absolutely nothing but cranking? Fuel may be cut off. Check for power to the FSS on the pump (with key on, should be an...

1986 6.9 IDI with no glow plug light and no start.

Yes. If the truck was working before the key was left on, something must have burnt up. I seem to recall that the old 6.9 controller had a tendency to short, keeping the GPs on until they burn up (or run the battery down, or both)... So if there's no spark, then measure the resistance at each...

1986 6.9 IDI with no glow plug light and no start.

OK. Is it possible that most or all of the glow plugs have failed from being left on/cycling for 2 hours? If you use a heavy lead to connect directly from the battery to the glow plug power stud on the relay, do you get a big spark and hot glow plugs (engine start)?

1986 6.9 IDI with no glow plug light and no start.

This may be a silly question, but have you checked to see if your batteries are dead? :dunno Leaving the key on will run them down... Does the engine CRANK but not fire?

Best order to install factory turbo parts?

Of course, now that it's been explained, it's obvious :D especially with the blind O-ring area on the turbo pedestal. I was thinking about the other end of the CDR (which of course goes into the valve cover grommet!) I'll start making that piece, while I wait for better (or at least warmer!)...

Wanted: Factory turbo airbox for IDI

Thanks, but I recently found a whole airbox complete with a filthy K&N filter on ebay and made an offer which was accepted. I forgot this ad was up. :)

Best order to install factory turbo parts?

oh well, guess I'm out $10 then ;) Is the snout of the CDR the same 1" diameter as the nipple on the airbox? I must be missing something since I don't see why that piece (and grommet) would be needed at all... :dunno

Best order to install factory turbo parts?

I think because it's a .pdf it just downloads a copy, then you can open it locally. That's what it does on my laptop, anyway... Sure, it doesn't look hard to make one, but if I don't need it, why go to the trouble ;) Thanks for the pic. That plate looks like it does nothing except keep the...

Best order to install factory turbo parts?

Another question. The CDR mounts to the bracket on the valve cover. But there's supposed to be another mounting plate, a separate piece, which I don't have. It's #25 on the attached pic from Typ4. What does that plate do - secure the rubber grommet that slips over the snout of the CDR? Do I...

    Unbelievable luck

I just paid a local shop (that actually knows a bit about IDI's) $400 labor to install my Luk 07225 kit and a new rear main seal. If you can get "Hank" for $400 that'd be a steal ;)

Fuel Gages read 1/4, but stop picking up fuel

I replaced both tanks rather than clean and derust, and the showerheads too. And I still have the 1/4-tank problem when going up hill or around curves! Senders don't look bent and the heads are near the bottom. I think the problem is that the tanks are not baffled and the fuel sloshes away just...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Today I went to a local sawmill and filled the bed with wood blocks... not sure how much but definitely more than the last load (which was 1.1 tons and still under the 8600 GVWR). So for a flat $30 fee I chucked wood until I was worn out. I pumped up the rear tires to 70 psi and it rides better...

    Cheap pyrometer

Yep, I already thought about that... but also reminded myself of the old saying, "A man with one watch always knows what time it is. A man with two watches is never sure" :D Once the conversion is complete I may do just that - fire it up with the probe connected to the panel meter, then connect...

    Cheap pyrometer

Good point, but it's a very unlikely failure mechanism to read just low enough to be believable, while high enough to damage an engine! If the thermocouple burns open (by far the most common failure), the gauge pins at zero. If the meter & driver fail in some odd manner as above, the readings...

    Noisey Diesel 6.9

The noise may be your cold advance changing... check the power to the advance solenoid and make sure it's not going on and off. When our IDI's have the extra advance, they sound quite a bit harsher with more diesel "clatter". Once the coolant is over 112F(?) the temp switch is supposed to open...
