So what did you do with your truck today?

After sitting at 3F for the past 24 hrs or more, it has warmed up to a balmy 10 degrees  Only an inch and a half of powder, no ice I can see on our dirt roads at least... So I ventured outside for the first time in 2 days to get the long extension cord and plug in the block...

    IDI Build

Welcome to the forum! My '93 7.3 was originally NA and definitely could have used more power. So I bought a complete factory turbo setup and bolted it on. Turned up the fuel screw two flats... then found the turbo was worn and wouldn't make more than 6 psi. A rebuilt turbo from CDD with...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Today I put some additive in the fuel tanks, and took the dog for a ride (Tuesday is trash day, then a couple of miles more to mix it through the fuel system). Temps are forecast to be below zero on Sun. and Mon. early morning/overnight. (That's not typical for southern Missouri!)

    Pending Machine Work

That looks more like a piece of something (a washer maybe?) entered the cylinder and got banged into the piston top a bunch of times before going out the exhaust...

    Battery jumper packs?

At one time or another, I have owned a '73 220D (60 crank hp, wheee!) and a '79 240D, both 4-speeds, and an '83 300SD auto. All were quite drivable in several inches of snow with all-season tires. :dunno Maybe there was ice underneath that inch of snow you had trouble with? Nothing works on...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Do they have a unique rear axle, or can you swap in a rear from a truck with a more favorable ratio than that stump-pulling 5.13?

So what did you do with your truck today?

Houlton? That's practically downstate :p 40 miles south of Presque Isle. Long trip to FK on snow machines though! I've been to both ends of Rt. 1 too :)

So what did you do with your truck today?

Don't you also need to heat the batteries and the oil in the pan? What blend of diesel do you run that won't gel at -33F (or colder)?

So what did you do with your truck today?

Coldest temps I've experienced were at the end of Jan/early Feb in Presque Isle, Maine. That winter also set a new all-time record of 203" of snow ("normal" is around 100"). I did not have a diesel vehicle then ;)

So what did you do with your truck today?

The ones on the right say 2.5 ton (which is 5000 lb). Is that each, per pair, or total for a set of four?

    Odd "ticking" noise

Mine would shift properly, but eventually the metal-on-metal contact will wear the shift collar and the forks... If that's it, you can even split the t-case without removing it from the truck (although it's a lot easier to work on sitting on the bench). Fork tips and most of the other parts can...

    Odd "ticking" noise

I had something similar when the plastic tips on the t-case shift forks were worn out and sitting in the sump (came out when I drained the fluid). Does it change if you push the lever towards 2H, or preload it towards 4H?

Glow plugs heat at hot start

No, I'm referring to mblaney's post where he uses an engine oil pressure switch to turn off the glow plugs... Edit: I looked at the schematic for the glow plugs and it appears that the only way to terminate the glow cycle with oil pressure would be to put a relay in series with the (Red/Light...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Pulled the seat. That bench is heavy! Only three bolts (the fourth had been either overtightened or was rusted in place and forced loose, because the weld nut on the cab floor was completely gone). I used a large fender washer, welded a 3/8" nut to it, but didn't feel energetic enough to move...

Glow plugs heat at hot start

That's a really neat idea! ;Sweet I'd need to plumb in a pressure switch, though, since I replaced the original "on/off" sender with an actual variable sender (and jumpered the fixed 20 ohm resistor on the instrument cluster). I don't recall off the top of my head, is there a disable line to...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Today I noticed a new intermittent "clunk" noise which was NOT driveline related, just on braking and bumps. Hmm. Suspension? Got home, walked around the truck, and noticed that the right rear fender liner in front was loose and flapping around including bumping that tire. So I fixed that... and...

Glow plugs heat at hot start

Thanks... looks like "it's not a bug, it's a feature" cookoo at least on the 7.3 version. I would have thought that not heating the GPs when they are not needed made more sense. :dunno

Glow plugs heat at hot start

I got the truck with several bad glow plugs 4 years ago and replaced them all with Motorcraft. The 7.3 IDI starts quickly, summer or winter, and as expected the glow time (and "Wait to Start" light) gets longer with colder temps. So far so good. But the controller has always called for a...

Low Silicate Green Coolant - Which One Are You Using?

Sure, I can see that, it's less work up front, but then you have to keep track of SCA and test strips. My truck had been neglected and I doubt the previous owner(s) ever heard of cavitation. It had green coolant and was low due to an external head gasket leak anyway. You mentioned flushing the...

Low Silicate Green Coolant - Which One Are You Using?

Why not use Zerex G-05? (Is there a reason you want to stick with "green" coolant?)

So what did you do with your truck today?

Today I went looking for oil leak(s). There's a lot in front, but no obvious source (like the front main seal). I degreased some of the area, especially around the timing gear cover and the lift pump. Luckily the gear cover isn't the problem. But the turbo drain I already knew was leaking...

how much time before 7.3 is warm? outside temp now 10*C

It usually takes mine a good 10 minutes if not longer, before I start to feel heat from the heater (and the gauge rising off C). Although it's a 20-25 mph drive for the first 2.5 miles on dirt roads before I get to the highway, so the engine has very little load...
