    ZF-5 w/4x4 swap

I'm jealous. I've been looking for donor trucks for a while now and can't find a thing. Want to do the 4x4 swap in my '91 dually. Sucks.

    Leaking diesel

Just noticed mine is leaking from the same place. Think it's coming from the brass three way that has the injector return lines attached to. Think it's rubber connected to plastic hard line.

Time for injectors, or is timing off?

That's what I was thinking but I just needed to hear it from someone else. Plus I keep forgetting that I still have some 6 year old fuel mixed in with the new fuel and 911.

Time for injectors, or is timing off?

I'm not doing anything with the fuel screw. Just wondering if I advance the timing some more, would the smoke clear up. It's slightly advanced now. Not even a dime. But if I go more I have to loosen the lines at the pump to get it to go over more. That's pretty much the question--if I advance...

Time for injectors, or is timing off?

I was thinking maybe the difference in the amount of fuel, but I don't know. White smoke= retarded timing? Not a lot, but enough that someone riding behind me will say , look at that piece of shit blowing smoke.

Time for injectors, or is timing off?

And if the timing setup is right, maybe injector time?

Time for injectors, or is timing off?

So I think I have my 87 dialed in with the timing. I used the lumi probe with the adjustable timing light, and got the mark close to the right edge of the plate for the mag pickup. I read that timing on a 7.3 is set @2000 rpm, and the 6.9 @1400 rpm. Well I'm running a 7.3 pump on my 6.9, and I...

    sending unit

Go to Gas tank depot. Look up your truck. I just did my front and rear sending units on my '87 6.9. They have shower heads too. Easiest to pull the body I think. Still a pain in the ass, but dropping the tank is worse IMO.

    Fuel tank pickup tube

Pull the bed. I'm in the process of replacing 2 bad sending units. You're probably going to have to cut the carriage bolts if they are rusted on. Pull the tail lights, undo harness at bumper, and undo the fill pipes at the body.

    Pulling Glowplug caps/lead off

Welcome. Those plastic covers get brittle after 25 or so years. Underneath is the bullet connector. If the plastic falls apart don't sweat it. Mine have been gone since I replaced my gp's. Just pull off by the connector- not the wire. If it's hot, put on a glove.

This is a 10 year old thread.

    New plugs wont start now.

Just for the hell of it, disconnect the fuel shutoff from the harness on top of the pump. Touch a test wire from the + battery to the fuel shut off. See if it's clicks. You never know when these electrical parts go.

Timing the 6.9 with a lumi probe.

Thanks. I put a 7.3 pump on the 6.9, so maybe the timing may need to be advanced for burn? Probably going to have to get back to it once it's on the road--the fuel in the tank is a mix of new diesel with water remover, and 6 year old fuel. Who knows what the cetane is right now.

Timing the 6.9 with a lumi probe.

I just googled fox valley diesel adapter and found posts back from 2013 on OB, which is when I bought mine. A guy in Alberta had a bunch of NOS and I happened to get one. So I time from the edge of the timing plate. With 20deg offset @2000rpm I was at the second mag hole. From what I read I...

Timing the 6.9 with a lumi probe.

Like the instructions in the pic states, my balancer has one notch. At 2000 rpm, the notch is at the bottom pickup hole, at 20 deg, the notch is at the second hole at 2000 rpm, if that means anything. There are no other degree marks on the balancer or probe holder.

Timing the 6.9 with a lumi probe.

It' a Deer valley. (?) I'm going to get it from the garage. It has a loop that the clamp from the timing light goes around.

Timing the 6.9 with a lumi probe.

Ok, so I've been going thru the searches and can't find complete info on how to time with a luminosity probe. I don't have any degree marks on the balancer , just the one groove. I warmed the truck up, put in the probe in #1, hooked up the timing light, and to my surprise it worked. The...
