Is this IDI the right truck for me?

R&D IDI Performance is right there in Maple Valley, WA - Might be worth giving him a call if you need something.

    LUK 07-225

Considering I've just entirely removed those inspection plates on all my trucks and had no issues in the last few years, I'd say yes. Oh, and I am in snow country, and do go through quite a bit of it and water depending on the season. Never had any issues with slippage due to either of them.

    6.9 idi with zf5 trans

LuK 07-225 is the part number for the 7.3-NA/ZF-5 kit. It's what you want for your 6.9.

Is this IDI the right truck for me?

Here's the thing: You say you are a mechanic. If, in your mind, you could pull the motor if you had to and swap it with another... it's totally the right truck for you. If you feel you'd have to pay a shop to do it, be more careful. Realistically, if you have the resources to be able to pull...

    Tempted by Newer Truck

I was looking at your 87 CC and drooling. I'd love a crew cab, especially that nice! Couldn't afford one right now, but it's honestly a nice looking truck. I agree with others here- 5-speed swap and it'll purr. With the turbo, if you can get the revs to around 2K at 70, it'll be much quieter...

    24 volt starer

Also, the 12V starter I bought off ebay came with a testing sheet. It was rated for rated power at 8V I think - somewhere between 7.2 and 8.5.

    24 volt starer

I've done this with a ****y 12V direct-drive starter on a 4-cyl John Deere diesel. Just wasn't cranking fast enough because it was worn out. So... rig up two batteries, give it 24V. It cranked much faster. Only problem was, it wouldn't /stop/ cranking - The darn solenoid didn't have enough...

    24 volt starer

Personally, I think that even if you got your starter to crank twice as fast as a stock starter, you won't get it to fire up without glow plugs when it's cold. There's simply not enough heat being generated without a lot of cranking. And, once it's started, it'll smoke badly till it gets warm...

Advice on proper draining and flush of coolant on a 94 7.3 idi n/a?

Personally, I use and recommend the Zerex G-05 or HD ELC coolants. Both are accepting of dissimilar metals(copper, brass, aluminum and iron), prevent cavitation and won't mess with old seals. They are both 5-year/300K rated, just fill and forget. No additives needed or wanted. I've had no...

    24 volt starer

Honestly, it's not needed. A non-worn-out 12V reduction starter works just fine. There's no need to go for antything more, not when the cheapest IDI starter on Ebay will crank that sucker over quite quickly... at least for a while...

    Wrecked

Check with your insurance company. Having gone through this in Idaho(which is probably one of the easiest states to do this in), I was told that as long as I just want liability(If I hit someone, their vehicle/them get fixed, I get nothing for my vehicle), everything is fine. Getting a...

    Newbie intro and radiator questions

Should be fine. They sell oil cleaner rad flush stuff that... is some sort of soapy stuff and acts the same way. Go for it. Should be fine. Not going to hurt anything. I'd be concerned about large clumps plugging either the oil cooler tubes, the radiator cap, or the thermostat. That being...

    7.3 isi injection pump tester

Oh, yeah, that cover. That's RTV, as far as I know. Get some Permatex 1-minute-gasket, and never have problems with that again! --- If I was just testing a pump, I'd just pry the cover off(breaking the RTV seal), and then just put it back on. It won't seal perfectly, but a couple of drops every...

    Wrecked

Honestly, if it flexed and straightened back out, it might well be just fine. Total out the rig, buy it back for a small fraction of the totaling price, weld in a new hitch, straightening as required - just add extra support to any bent sections -and get your branded title back. Insure it for...

    7.3 idi coolant in oil

I'd say you have three likely failure points: 1. The front cover / water pump gasket. This is the simplest to replace and cheapest. 2. The Intake manifold gasket. Earlier 7.3 IDI heads have coolant ports facing the intake(valley pan) gasket, which are simply dead-headed there by the gasket...

    7.3 isi injection pump tester

Usually, these have a rubber gasket there. The DB2 reseal kits I've gotten all come with one... and it's fully reusable. I've never had an issue removing the side plate, adjusting the fuel screw(the only thing in there) and reinstalling.

    ZF5 swap questions

Yeah, basically. The external mounting points are definitely the same. Internally, things do change based on years - some 6.9 blocks use press-in oil squirters, for example. And some IDIT blocks that got rebuilt at various shops ended up with N/A rods/pistons in them... I'm not sure on what...

    Lifting a 94 F250 idi

So, a couple things: 1. Go invest in a big DeWalt or Milwaukee 1/2" 18v/20v impact. Expensive, but you only cry once. My DeWalt DCF899 is one of the most valuable tools I own. I haven't had to pull out an air impact in quite a while, and batteries last a lot longer than a small air tank. 2. To...

    ZF5 swap questions

07230 is the one you want(flywheel, clutch disk, pressure plate and throwout bearing). 07225 is for N/A blocks(It's the block, not whether it has a turbo on it that matters. MAKE SURE to check the model/serial on the block on the driver's side next to the IP gear cover. If it is 7.3D... you want...

    7.3 isi injection pump tester

See, the thing is... volume is generally not the issue. If you hook a pump up to an injector or multiple and rotate the pump by hand(or with a drill), you can see if it'll squirt fuel. The things that practically matter for a working pump are: 1. Cranking volume/pressure(can it create enough...

Batteries load tested ok but voltage dropping

So, two things: After cranking for a bit and then checking, I could totally see 12.4V on the batteries. Our starters(all types) have 4 brushes contacting the armature. If one of these four wears out to the point of a bad connection, the starter will run at about half-speed. Sounds like a dead...

Glow Plug Harness to Battery connector

When I pulled my last couple of OBS motors, I found a single lead mounting to the fuse box on the driver's fender well(remove that nut to pull the engine+harness) Not sure if there's two wires feeding that from elsewhere, but they don't go through a plug to the engine unlike the bricknose trucks.

    Tach install

Realistically, yes, the gear stays in place without much chance of movement. I've done it multiple times. If it does move on you, you can get it back within a tooth or so easily enough - remove #1 glow plug, rotate engine until you feel air coming out of the GP hole just before the timing 0...
